Speck,

My intention wasn't that at all. I was just expressing my opinion on how the novice hunters like me cannot and "most probably" will not be able to tell the difference between a 3x9x40mm Nikon/Bushnell/Leupold/Burris of-course granted they are the same price range and made out of the same material. Its not that the scopes are "same" its just that we haven't had many experiences in the actual hunting field nor did we look through scopes so many times that we can tell x from y. :bag-on-head:

Im sure, I am one of many who wonders why some things are $$$ amount and others are much less, when they seem to do the same thing. So I just expressed it in that post. I apologize if it came out the wrong way, my intention was not to downplay on anyone else or their opinion.

How I pick a scope.....

First of all, I am much more of a gun guy than a hunter. I put a lot of rounds down range at the range and I have a lot of guns I need to scope.

1) On your budget you should be able to get an excellent scope. I have never spent even half that much. If I were you and I wanted to get the best, I would go with the Leupold. I have one that my dad gave me in 1968 - still going strong and still under warranty!

2) My current method of picking scopes is to go to Midwayusa.com and read the reviews. There is a great deal of quality variance in low priced scopes. Some are good - most are not. The key is getting as much information as possible. If I see all or nearly all good reviews from folks who have the scope mounted on heavy recoiling rifles - then I may order it. When I get the scope, I carefully look at it and through it. If it is not bright and clear edge to edge, it goes back. Next it goes in the freezer and after 2-3 hours it comes out and after warming up a bit, it goes into cold water. When it comes out, I check for fogging. If it makes it to this point, I then mount it and see how it does at the range. So far, this system has worked great for me. I have yet to pay over $100.00 for a scope.

Just my .02 worth.
