I've started looking into pig hunts in California, and I can't find anything cheaper than ~$350, and from what I'm seeing, I'd probably worry if I'd found it. Do any of you know any places where a person can try pig hunting and have a reasonable chance of at least seeing a pig? Years ago I hunted Cache Creek and Cow Mountain, and I'm pretty much not going to try public land here. Are there any options for hunting private land, perhaps unguided hunts?

well,,,one of the reasons I signed on to the wilderness unlimited 'club',,,,,after your 1 st year
'initiation' fee.you pay $1500.00/yr for all sorts of hunting ,on private ranchs, whenever the species
is in season,{club seasons vary a lil}.theres a few 'extra' rules, but I think it covers the cost involved
for guided hunts.
you might wanna check it out?theres plus's/minus's

In all honesty, $1500/yr. is out of my league, and I doubt the initiation fee is any closer (rumors are it's $10 grand, is that right?).

you say no public land hunting...but there are pigs in cache creek...few...but they are there.

if you are hoping to see pigs every outting then guided hunting is what you need to do.....if you put in the time you will see pigs on public land.

The Coalinga area has hogs, but you have to put in the effort. It's all public, BLM land. I was driving through that area a while back and seen 5 pigs off the side of the road. They're in there. Public land hunting is best if you're on a budget, IMO.

nah,,,but,,,it is another 1500 though,that $3000 the first year,then $1500 every year.
pricey,,,,yes, but what I like about it is all the other hunting oppurtunities you get, plus some
general camping and fishing.if your in the central/northern cal area, you have dozens of
ranches to go to nearby.I'm in so-cal,with few ranches and long drives. But it seemed like the
best 'bang for the buck' its just a thought.

Now, I hold public areas near and dear to me heart, so I'm going to go with a renewed belief in them for pigs. Thanks, guys, for the confidence-building.
And Arrowslinger, I won't ask for specifics. It's enough to know that they are there.

Joshua, i'll go out on a limb here and say that a public land hog is one of the toughest animals to find and kill in California. So be persistant and try some new areas, if you're still stumped and can't find any sign, shoot me an e-mail this fall/winter and i'll help ya out a bit.

CATman, where in coalinga are the public areas? From what I've heard, most, if not all of the area were privately owned only.

I've been busy working as much as I can and doing a little duck hunting on the weekends. He told me about the bow but said he still needs to get with you to get it fitted, you know how slow he is though. I hear you on depending on the meat I'm low from last year and am putting in time now to load up for the next few months. I've been hunting with my son mostly this year as Paul has been busy with the baby but we'll definitely have to hook up and make a few leggitt runs. Good to get back in touch with you Pat.

Joshua-

I am a public land hunter with a very limited budget just like you, and I will have to say that one of the best, if not THE best resources I have found for help with getting into game is right here, JHO. I have been given a wealth of information and experience from the members here. That being said, I was never provided with a detailed minute-by-minute instruction booklet or map, I had to put in the time myself. I in turn have pointed other members in the right direction as well. And that in itself can be very valuable......just a point in the right direction. Guys like Arrowslinger, Lurediver, Bodega and Spectr17 himself are great guys and will give you a nudge in the right direction. I will say now that Fort Hunter Liggett is your best bet for a hog in California. Might take a trip or two before you see one, but keep at it and you might get an offer from a JHOer to hunt with who knows the place real well. I myself will be after hogs on BLM land starting February or March. Your hunting opportunities will open up a bit if you are a bow hunter as well. Keep at it.......it's been done and some have done it with the help of the JHO community.

Are you a rifle or bowhunter or both. We will be making a few trips to sonoma to bow hunt pigs over the next couple months. Shoot me an email if you would be interested in checking it out.

Camp Roberts some times its good and other times its not but well worth the hunt at times. its better than being home on the couch or at work. The last hunt out i seen from 20 to 30 hogs a day i even shot at one but missed but i cant complain i shot 2 with my bow this year that maid my year. Its all about putting in the time or knowing someone that knows some good hunting spots. This place is well worth the time. Good Luck .
