This is my first Elk hunt (i have been trying for 20 yrs to go) and am traveling all way from michigan . We will be there 8 days ahead of time to do some scouting but any help would sure be appreciated .
We have narrowed it down to desolation , ukiah or minam area but not set in stone and could change with right advice

Wish i had some advice for you but i have never hunted that area. All of them hold good numbers of elk though. If you havent already id contact the local field office for that region at (541) 963-2138
they should be able to help you out some.
Good Luck

I'm sure you already know that desolation and ukiah 2nd season hunts are spike only. You might also consider a fall bear tag too. There are good numbers of elk and black bear in that corner of the state.

My father-in-law hunts somewhere in the northern half of the ukiah unit, but he wont even tell nun were at.

Sorry no info from me, I hunt the cascades for elk.

sh** was not ready for that glad you pointed that out
I have changed our plans 2 times all ready and looks like i will be going over it again . I have waited so long for this that i would really like to try for something bigger than spike . I see that there is four other units hood maupin white river and part of biggs guess i will have to go over topos and do bunch more research
would be nice if they made these synopsis that a person didnt have to spend time jumping back and forth through the darn thing
Thanks

if time of year is of no consequence dont over look the High Cascade General Season. Its a good hunt. Wont be quite as cold as it those Nov eastside hunts. Plus there are a good number of elk too.

thanks for all your help guys
I am in quite a delema about this whole trip . We have been planing this trip since first of this yr and the 2 friends that were coming with me cant get away any sooner than second hunt and they are not interested in spike only or to excited about all extra hunters in other 4 areas..
I am lucky enough to be self employed and have enough ppl working for me to keep business going so, i could go on the first cascade hunt (i believe oct19-25) and if they are bugling that would be to sweet..
What to do --take chance and wait for second hunt ,more people ,no bugling, and possibly no hunting partners to go,less area or-- go on cascade hunt ,warmer ,chance of elk bugling ,more area, but alone..
Hmmm and this was supposed to be fun oh,, well i am sure which ever way i end up going it will be worth it just to get out in wild
thanks again

Personally id choose the ealier Cascade Hunt. There is plenty of good wilderness areas to choose from to hunt. Elk at that time of the year arent really bugling but you may hear a couple. Good thing about that hunt is you can take any bull. Good luck on making your choice. If you do decide on the Cascade hunt let me know and ill give you some ideas on some spots to hunt.

When we first started to plan this hunt back in april we were gonna do cascade hunt and that was spot we had picked to go then plans changed to second hunt till i was informed of our mistake on spike only . Must be an sign from above eh :)
