Oregon Elk Hunt

I want to apply for an Oregon elk tag next yr(either cow or bull).I would prefer that the tag's season is in late Nov-Dec. I would also want a zone that provides good public lands and access.

Hey Loye, I was thinking the same thing about next year Oregon Elk hunting, except I'm looking for a place or suggestions for the archery in Sept. Might try some salmon fishing while I'm there too.

You can download the 2004 regs. $438 for license and elk tag. $4.50 for a controlled hunt draw application. Most of the later season stuff hunts are draw hunts with preference points. General seasons run in late October. You can even get a cougar tag for $151, though you technically can't bring it back to Calif. if you got one.

Archery runs concurrent with bow deer. End of Aug through Sept. Access with general archery elk tag is for most all the state for either elk species in a variety of terrain for thick, impenetrable, pot-farm filled coastal forests to pristine alpine high country to desolate sage flats.
A second late bow season for cows is available those who didn't fill their tags in the general season. It is open on the west side in late Nov to mid Dec.

Read the regs. Pick one of those books that gives you odds of getting a tag for a given hunt. Let's you know how realistic your chances of pulling a tag in a drawing. There is a 5% cap for nonresident tags for any draw hunt.

You can also call OFG and request that they send you a break-down of what the draw odds are per preference point pool. This is handy if you want an idea of how many points it takes to draw a hunt in most instances.

Also, you can get poop sheets from OFG that cover such herd statistics as bull to cow ratios, overall number of elk per unit, number of hunters that hunted it and such. You can also glean general trends in herd populations from these publications.

Anyway, all that info can be useful when trying to choose a place to go if you get into that sort of thing.

Oregon is a waste of time. There are not enough elk around anymore to give you much of a chance.

This only applies if you will be hunting in a unit that I do. All the others hold lots and lots of really big bulls.

well if you want a real easy hunt for a cow elk id suggest hunt number 224a Elliot Rifle. this hunt runs Dec 4-12 and has a one antlerless bag limit. its all public land and there is a lot of elk in that area. if you couldnt kill a cow in that place with a rifle you need help lol. its a "new" hunt this year with 55 tags available so your chances of drawing will be ok but not great as a first choice on your application. this area is located in the NW section of the Tioga unit near Reedsport.

Oregon Archer...find a place and show them what it's like to hunt in 8ft high salal. If they came to WA I would like to show the whitetail bowhunters my favorite hunt on long Island in Willapa Harbor by Longbeach. Got salal over 10 feet high and thicker than evergreen blackberries.

that area really isnt that harsh. lots of good old cuts and plenty of big timber to crawl through too.

HEY, that's my stomping grounds. Yes, it's a good antlerless hunt and should be fairly easy to fill. However, 1-2 preference points are needed sometimes for the antlerless stuff. Bull tags are easy to get, but the hunting is usually crazy because of all the logging roads around. I prefer to fish during this time of the year because of it.
