I'll be headed out (Friday) to go chase some elk (archery). Does anybody have any news from any units? It looks like the high country is getting decent day temps (low 70's) and that night temps are freezing. I'll be in Southwest Oregon (Cascade Unit).

Good luck finding somewere to go. Most of southwest Oregon is locked up atleast until it rains. Very little of the private land is open, and I have heard rumors that the ODF was going to a level 4. I really dought that they will now with the lower temps, and there is actaully dew in the morning. If I were you head to the Keno unit, alot of public land, but alot of people too.

Hood is good. But then it always is. I'm hunting Rifle and/or Pistol. Went scouting last night for my upcoming deer hunt next weekend. Aw shucks! All I saw was Elk.

I'll keep that in mind for next year. Oregon was good, but no cigar on the elk.

For what it's worth, I'm right there with ya snoopdog--elk 1, bill 0. I did have a blast on my trip to Oregon. Hunted 2 different areas in Eastern OR, met a local who showed me around the second area I went to, and actually called a very mature, heavy bull into within 350 yds and talked to him for 15-20 minutes altogether--no shot opportunities though. I got the bull pissed off enough to tear up a juniper pretty good--couldn't tell if he was drippin' snot or not. But, it sure made the trip worthwhile. I know I can get them elk to talk now. And it was a big rush getting that close to such an awesome creature....I think I'll mostly be pursuing elk during the rut for my out-of-state trips from here on out.

Overall, the weather was too warm for the rut to be in full swing. The fellow I met took me out to a huge 16,000 acre ranch where he used to work and knows the fellow who has the archery season lease on the ranch for trophy traditional gear hunts, and they hadn't gotten any shot opportunities thru mid-week last week. They only had gotten 2 bulls mildly excited. I was hunting along the border of that property on public lands when I called a bull in down in a hell hole it would have taken me 2 days to pack him out of.

The most chilling part of my trip was when the fellow I met started talkin' about his brother who was shot off of horseback on an Elk hunt out in Oregon. Just down the road, the owner of Kershaw knives has a ranch and knew the family of this fellows brother. He started up a trust fund for his wife and kids. It turned out that the knife I bought the week before @Wal-mart on sale, was a Kershaw DWO knife. Part of the Proceeds from any of the DWO series, goes to the Officer family trust. It's a great line of knives.

DWO knives

It's a small world sometimes.

I also ran into 1 of 4 does that jumped right in front of my truck and will need to replace a quarter panel and pull out my front bumper a half an inch. I think I will need to be extra cautious while hunting for a while.

Be Safe,

Bill

Thanks for that Bill. I am a felow Oregonian, and always looking for a good knife. I'll have to check them out, certainly if it is going to contribute to a good cause. Hey, I support the local farmers too. Oregon All The Way. I get a freezer full of meat every year here in Oregon through a reciprocal arangement with an orchard owner. I get the meat...he gets an exterminator. Good deal.

for those of you who came here to archery elk hunt and went home empty handed we do have a late archery cow elk hunt which you can participate in with a general archery season tag. there are only a few untis open but its a great time to hunt and see a lot of animals. its all on the westside of the cascades and last about 2 weeks. check the regs for exact dates.
