Oregon hunt 2008

So, I know it might be a little early but I have wasted too many years. I have 5 points for elk in Oregon and I am trying to find area that I have good chances of drawing and most importantly area where my chances of baging a bull are good. Looking for place where jeeps, 4 x 4's, and atv's are not permitted access. I never mind hiking. Can't stand crowds. Does anyone know anything about Chetco or Powers areas?

Yeah greyghost I'm looking for just about the same thing. I think I've got 8 points and would like to get a good Roosevelt. I wasn't going to start researching quite yet but since you brought the topic up. I'm looking to get away from the crowds and would also being willing to pay a trespass fee for access to quality private land. Oh and I only hunt with a rifle as of right now.
Hopefully someone will post up or e-mail some info.

operations down during hunting season.

Well with 5 pts you are still probably not going to draw Powers unit. Some really good bulls in that unit but youll need to do your homework. Its a pretty brushy unit and pretty steep to.

If you wanted to go to the east side you could easily draw Murderers Creek and hunt the wilderness area. I have family who rifle hunt it every few years when they draw and they do quite well and usually see quality bulls.

Thanks, I will see what that area looks like. I am trying to do my research early because this would be my 1st elk hunt and only my second out of state hunt. My first out of state hunt was this year in Wyoming for antelope. It worked out quite well. Mostly looking for those areas where atv's 4 x4's are not allowed. I only hunt on foot. Makes a hunt nice and uncrowded.

I am in Oregon as well and for good Roosevelt hunting I would suggest the Tioga or Saddle Mountain unit. Both very good with lots of Roosevelt. If you plan on hunting the east side of the state for Rocky Mtn elk, there are plenty of good areas that are closed to motorized vehicles. There rae some really good bulls out there, but you have to find the deep holes that are pretty remote. There are a couple good tags that will take quite a few years to draw. Wenaha and Walla Walla have great success rates for both rifle and bow. Mt. Emily and Sled Springs are decent. If a guy wants a true adventure you can head back into the Eagle Cap wilderness. LOTS of game back there. I have hunted all over the state and have been fortunate enough to take a few elk (all with a bow) in many different areas, I think it adds to the adventures to see new places. I dont get on here much, but I'll try and give you as much information as possible if needed.

I hunted Eagle Cap 10 years ago and I shot a nice 4x4.

most all of Oregon during archery season is OTC. good bulls to be had but you're gonna have to work for it.
