I'm trying to get my buddy into hunting this year. Planning on a pig hunt when he visits in June.
He's in portland, and doesn't have any hunting buddies there, and he's not having any luck with the few phone calls he has placed.

From what I've read if your over 17 in Oregon, you don't even need a hunter saftey class?
If thats true, would an Oregon license be enough to show in order to buy a CA non-resident license?

Just trying to get it figured out for him so he can just come down and have no problem getting his non-res license immediately.

any info is appreciated.

My brother in law had the same problem. He and my sister live in Oregon and when they come here for holidays his favorite thing to do it go coyote hunting. He went to the local Sportsman's warehouse, showed them his driver's license and received an Oregon hunting license. With the Oregon hunting license, he is able to come into California and purchase a non-resident license. Now, to purchase additional day licenses, he just has to show his previous non-resident licenses.

so his oregon license was enough to show to get a ca non-res license?

you mention he had the same problem, so just curious if he actually ever had a "problem"?

thanks for the DFG link... I am aware of the website. according to the website, any other state license should be enough. but you can understand why I'm thinking that just seems too easy...

Was hoping there might be some oregon hunters with 1st hand experience that could shed some light.
thanks.

He was able to get his CA non-resident license with his Oregon license. The problem was that he couldn't find his hunter's safety card and until he looked into the laws to get his Oregon license, we though he had to have a hunter's safety card. Apparently, in Oregon, if you are over a certain age and have a valid driver's license, you can get a hunting license.

ok. yeah once I figured that out, thats when the other question popped into my head.

"since in oregon you can basically get a license OTC by just being of age, does CA recognize that as enough to show to buy a CA non-res license"

thanks.

California only requires a hunter's safety card for a first-time hunter. I you show a hunting license from Oregon or any other state, they will issue you a California Hunting License. If he has a California Driver's License, they will issue him a resident hunting license. If he has any other state's Driver's License, they will issue him a non-resident license.

I don’t know about CA (even thou I live here) but if you go out of state (WY, CO….) they will sell you a license without asking to see your Hunter’s Safety Card. Once in the field, if you are stopped by a Game Warden, that’s when you need to show the Hunter’s Safety Card. This has happened to me twice. I would be sure to talk to someone from DF&G.

Not so. My son was refused a license in Steamboat Springs at the DOW. He had to go to the DOW because the period had already started. He chalked up another 60 miles and driving time returning to get his hunter's safety card.

Every out of state license and tag that I purchased was always through a draw and was sent to my house through the mail. I think one State I had to enter in a Hunters Safety number on the application, but I really doubt there is a way for them to check that number.

I have been stopped in CO and WY and asked by a Game Warden to show him my Hunters Safety Card. The first time I thought I left at home. I showed him my CA hunting license and I explained to the Warden there is no way a person (my age) can get a CA hunting license without taking a Hunter’s Safety class. He did not care and wanted to see the card. Thank god I found it in the truck or I would have gotten an expensive ticket. I think the law was the same in Alaska but I never saw a Warden the whole time I was there. I’m pretty sure the law is the same here (we always have more laws that are unnecessarily stricter than any other state).

I would hate to get a license and think you’re good to go and get stop somewhere. I would talk to someone at a DF&G office.

as stated before CA DFG only requires proof of a prior license.......almost all other states if you are applying for a non-resident tag you MUST show proof of Hunters Safety Card......always.......working at HQ for almost two years i would always get calls from CO, WY, UT, etc....asking me to verify hunters eduation numbers or if they passed.........if i could not show proof.......they would not get a license.......this one really smarts if you drive all the way there and don't get to hunt cause you don't have a hunters ed card.......something everyone wanting to hunt out of state should remember......

also, for you bpnclark.....you must have just slipped through without having to show proof.....for my KS hunt this past year i had to send a photo copy of my hunter ed. card and also had to bring it to KS...

I showed proof. I found it in my truck.

As for buying the tags without showing them proof, that happens all time. I don’t think that I’m the only one. I know when I called DF&G in Sacramento; they could not find my Hunters Safety Card (by computer) because the system did not go back that far. They said they had to find it by hand. I told them I would call them back if I could not find it. I found it and never call back.

If the DF&G is confirming Hunters Safety cards for the hundreds of CA that go out of state, I think that’s great. I did not think they did. You guys must be very busy.

Next time you are in CO, go to a DOW office and have them confirm your Hunter Safety card in the computer system. Your license and tags will have the confirmation printed on them in the future and no need to carry your card anymore.

I have had no troubles getting a CA license with my Oregon license. The first year I showed them my out of state. Form then on I just sent a copy of my previous non-resident license. Never had the warden ask about hunter safety. Though I think ANYONE starting out should sit through a class no matter how old they rare.
