Chopper, I haven't met any Bob's here but there is some decent goose hunting in the area. The mapes ranch (closure area) was super loaded with geese last year. I hear them flying over Ripon @ night from Dec - Feb each year. I haven't really gotten much into goose hunting but that might change this year since I'm getting know more people in the area. I'll drop you a line for a hunt if the opportunity presents itself.
Knowing the pigs would, or eventually would be using the dozer cuts from a month or so ago to feed on the fresh grass and easily rooted ground..Cecil & myself decided upon this place for a morning hunt, 2 months prior i kicked up a monster of a boar as it fed head first into some brush w/ no body exposed, i was only 20 yards away when it exploded from the brush.
We eased along the lower half of the mountain, cutting down a drainage to get directly south of the highest point, we would then work east and start cutting up the dozer cuts looking for pigs heading to their beds or catching the last bit of food on the shaded east slopes.
Two hours of hunting resulted in little fresh sign and a bit of dissapoitment as the temp quickly warmed and we headed to the top of the bald knob....once there, we cut straight down...this is the dozer cut mentioned previously that i saw the big pig on.......we were only 20 yards past that spot when i heard an animal rise from it's bed and take two steps. I knew it was a pig, but only problem was...it was only 8 steps away. The pig was bedded under an oak tree cover in poison oak, so the base of the tree was thick and created a perfect bed.....i knew the pig didn't smell us since the wind was in my face. We could hear the pig breathing, trying to get a wiff of us.....we didn't move but i was at full draw waiting to catch a glimpse of 'em. Instead of running, the pig simply walked back into the poison oak and bedded down again...this time i could see light in the oak, then it quickly went black from the pig blocking the sun & lying down.....i came to full draw again, wanting to send an arrow into the 4" hole i had in front of me, but not being able to get much of anything on video...we decided to wait and see what would happen, then the pig bolted w/ zero chance for a shot. Two more piglets ran out and i waited for another, nothing moved so we threw a rock trying to stir up another.
No shots on this one, but always fun to be 8 steps from a hog and not knowing what's gonna happen next......
This has got to be one of the longest threads ever on JHO.
My hunt:
Wednesday evening found Skeeks and myself trying to decide where I would have a good chance of ambushing a hog headed for water. Locating a good spot where he would be able to film it was the big question. We finally decided on a tree stand uphill from the road where a good hog trail led down to the creek. It was getting late so we rushed off in the jeep and got as close as we figured possible before parking and walking into the stand. The mosquitos and biting flies are terrible right now so I covered up in deet and topped that off with some scent killer. I figured the hogs would smell us from a mile away and never appear. Boy was I wrong!
We had only been in the stand long enough to set up the camera when from behind us and uphill I could hear the pitter patter of lots of feet. 24 feet to be exact. 6 meat hogs, all about 90 pounds, came right down the trail and walked right under the stand. They milled around under us for about 15 seconds then continued down the hill towards the creek. I was trying to get turned around as quietly as possible. Anyone who knows me knows I'm a loud mover. When I got spun around, the 6 hogs had stopped under a large liveoak tree, presumably looking for acorns and one on the right presented me with an almost perfect broadside shot. I confered with my partner to be sure he had the camera on the right one and came to full draw....................................................................
My arrow flew straight and true. The 100 grain hypershock mechanical broadhead struck the hog directly in the front shoulder shattering the legbone, entered the chest cavity slicing thru the top of the heart and exiting only about 1 inch out the bottom of the brisket. The hog ran down to the creek and crossed over into the thickest stuff around before piling up about 75 yards away. Skeeks had to bloodtrail him on his hands and knees. I'm sure glad he was there. Thanks a bunch Skeeks. I will never forget his words as he was dragging that hog out of there for me.
"It;s a good thing I like you"
HOGIN-IT
On night 1 AS and I went to the double secret spot the wind was bad blowing right down the canyon so we decided to sit in this little saddle right on a well used pig trail. We sat there for about an hour and then we could hear them grunting about 50 yards away. There was this big pile of poison oak and oaks in-between them and us so after about 20 minutes of this I could not stand it any more and we decided to stalk them down.
We crept as quiet as possible but every thing is dry and with about 6 yards to go I stepped on something that sounded like a shot going off then all went quiet for about 10 seconds and they started rooting again 6 more steps and there they are, I come to full draw and let it go. It flew about an inch right past his a$$ and off they run we thought but wait here they come again, I nock another arrow and let fly, direct hit. We lost the blood trail in the night so we came back at first light and recovered this pig about 300 yards away.
That's it the rest of you guys get your stories posted up!
Way to go Chopper!
Way to go Cecil!
Hot Damn this is good stuff!
Better than 3m industrial adhesives any day!
On hunt 3 AS and I went to the secret spot passed the SLINGER stand and headed up the draw on a nice and wide trail as silent as a spring breeze, we get on top the wind was not ideal but it would do! As we approached the crest be went right to check a few tunnels but no one was home. We headed due west to the end of the finger ridge and headed north –east along the chemise line, we crept into the deepest bowels of this area to find nothing moving.
As we sat there and waited out the sun to continue it’s decent to the ocean things started to move quail and squirrels were setting up for the night so we headed back to where we started with the wind in our faces. We covered 500 yards and nothing showed it face or a sound. We had one chance left we started up the last draw walking slowly paying attention to every grain of sand we put our foot on! And after walking 125 yards up the hill there stood a boar about 125 lbs 30 yards away looking right at us! All of sudden the wind swirled and in a flash he was gone. We got all of it on tape! I guess it just was not our turn tonight!!!
Although many may disagree w/ what my signature says..."ya can't kill'em unless ya shoot at'em"....if you shoot at'em, you better be able to track'em. So thanks to Pigig & BDB for their kind words
This was definately the best hunt i've been on...'specially when Chop killed one on tape. Nothing like reviewing your shot & kill w/ good friends over drinks and dinner...................by the way, it rains tooooo damn much in Portland..but the night life is top notch
I can't wait to see Chops bow kill on tape. That's worth the price of admission just by itself... We have spent a lot of time up there and it'll be cool to see him take a hog with the bow and not the "7".
Shoot, I need to get a kill on video. That way I can watch it every night before I go to bed. And don't think I won't. My wife will think me a little weird if I start watching Chopper, pigig and the lot every night before bed. HMmmmmm, watch a pig killin' video just before bed of dudes I know and then jump in the sack with the ole lady and try and get some. Something just seems a little wrong about that. "Geeezzz honey, you seem so excited tonight, what were ya doin' before you came to bed?", " Aaaaaaaa, nothing!".
AS is one of the best blood trailers I've seen. He sure had it goin' on with my big ole sow a few months ago. Thanks again AS.
Lurediver, we need to get with Chopper and find out what the entrance fee will be for a TEAM JUDO VS TEAM CALI hunt. Hhhhhmmmmm. Not sure if Crown alone will do it.
Two weeks without a pc was killing me.... Glad to just be here.
