ALOHA Bruce, how'd you folks weather the great earthquake? Hope all is well. Here on Maui we got big a scare with whole house shaking and things falling off shelves, even watching my avocado trees having their fruits shaken off. Felt like house would slide down mountain but fortunately worse of damage a cracking in tile wall that holds my house up, gotta get a structural inspection this week. Was out of power for only 4 hours, but my parents on Oahu still out of power. Take care now, let us know how you and wife are doing.

A hui hou, Ji

Uncle Ji:

Thanks so much for thinking of me. WOW!!! What a terrible deal. The epicenter was about 20 miles from our home. My wife was running in a 10K race in town and I was sitting on the edge of my bed with our Brittany, Gypsy, and our mini-dachshund, Penny Lane. All of a sudden everything began to shake and I mean really shake. I experienced the Northridge earthquake, but that was more like an explosion. This began as a shake and got stronger and stronger and stronger and lasted 16 seconds [honest to gosh, 16 seconds]. The whole house began to sway and I could hear breaking glass everywhere. The TV left its stand and went 4 or 5 feet, the windows shook open, the front door popped open, the gate on the deck shook open, furniture began to move, the ceiling fans wobbled, and I hit the floor running but fell flat on my butt the moment I hit. No way could I stand up. Gypsy shot out the door, leaving a massive trail of urine, and I crawled/stumbled after her and saw her 100 yards away heading for a main highway. Penny Lane crawled beneath the bed and peed all over and I tried to stand again but fell and then I saw another TV fly off and the old Seeburg jukebox wobbled across the floor and hit the desk. Broken glass was everywhere. I shut the doors and took off on foot after Gypsy, falling hard when I missed a step and hurting my hip badly. Don't know yet what the problem is but I can hardly walk now. I followed after Gypsy but she was gone. There were dogs everywhere, running this way and that. I went back and got in my truck and took off after her. It was one of the saddest moments of my life, fearing I had lost her and driving down the street and seeing so many of my wonderful neighbors sitting on the sidewalks and curbs, heads in hands, crying their eyes out. People running up the street calling out for their dogs or checking on neighbors. I went down the street and got some really good friends to go out looking for Gypsy. 1/2 an hour later, I see a man and his son walking down the sidewalk with Gypsy in tow. Man, I could have kissed that guy!! Tears are coming to my eyes right now as I type this. He had tears in his eyes because his dog was gone. I got a description and began to pass the word. I got home, put Gypsy in the back yard, and found out that Penny Lane was gone. She was so scared of the quake and of being alone and so excited because of all the dogs running around loose that she squeezed between two slats on the lanai and ran off. My neighbors told me where they had seen her and a moment later a couple kids came up carrying Penny. I put her in the back with Gypsy and attended to the damage.

Everything breakable is broken, and I mean everything. Light bulbs don't work because the shaking broke all the filaments. It looks like a bomb went off. I went back out and helped other folks find their dogs and cats. A lot of the pets are still missing and a lot of these folks suffered major damage.

I finally was able to make contact with my wife and she was shocked. The race officials told runners the quake was no big deal and carried out the race. I told Kim [my wife] to get her ass home ASAP and she was shocked. She felt the quake but since the race officials indicated it was no big deal she went ahead and ran. That really pissed me off. When she got home, not only did she get both barrels at point blank range from me, but she really got clobbered between the running lights when she walked through the front door and saw the extent of the damage.

It would be easy to feel sorry for oneself, but I need to bear in mind that during the shaking, I honestly thought that this might be the end. And instead of a 6.6, what if it had been a 7.6? I'm a lucky, lucky guy, any way you cut it.

Larry Sogla, maybe all your "God Bless's" paid off for this old sinner. Thanks again to all for your thoughts. Hope when the Big One hits California, you are as fortunate, or blessed, as I was today.

Uncle Ji: Laupahoehoe should be in really good shape for hogs by December 1. Let's make a date of it!

Doc,
God Bless and a big thanks to the Good Lord that you and your beloved wife are OK(your sore hip will be taken care of by good doctors and by His healing hand). Stuff can be replaced but you and your wife are priceless. We will pray that His protection will continually cover you and your wife and for His healing hand on your sore hip. God Bless, always.

Glad everyone ok.

We had a Island Breeze program Sunday for the anniversary in our local church in SoCal with performers coming from the islands. The performers never lose a beat despite worries back home.

With our prayers for your continued safety.

Aloha Bruce, Sorry to hear the damage you suffered, hang in there, our thoughts and prayers are with you. I had my place inspected for damage yesterday, there are 2 cracks in the garage wall that holds my house up above, and one of them has lateral cracks radiating from the vertical crack so looks scary but the footing and garage slab is still solid so inspector suggested we just leave it be for now but monitior especially after any aftershocks like yesterday's 4.0.
December just might be doable depending on Doctors exam this coming Monday, the titanium hardware is aggrivating the muscles over it so may need to be removed which means more R&R. I shall keep you posted. Do thay allow hunting pigs and birds at the same time at Laupahoehoe? If yes I might bring my old USSR made Baikal SxS with Brenekke slugs, and some bird loads, always wanted to hunt big game with a SxS pretending i'm on safari in Africa. Take care and give our aloha to your wife.

A hui hou, Ji

Hey Doc, my thoughts and prayers are with you. My wife and I rode out the Loma Prieta quake here in Santa Cruz on Oct 17 in 1989. I remember it like it was yesterday. For a couple years afterward, I jumped every time a big truck went by the house. Thank God you guys were not seriously injured, it could have been a lot worse. Be very careful with your drinking water, the supply is very likely to have been contaminated. When we got hit, we were all on bottled water until the supply was inspected and cleared. Hang in there...

Uncle Ji:

Laupahoehoe doesn't allow bird hunting of any kind ever. Strictly pigs. The result, though, is terrific pig hunting, even within 400 yards of the road. If your back is a problem, we can still hunt with very little hiking. Now, if you want some serious bird hunting, Mauna Kea is the place. Mid-November is best because the turkeys are out and about, as well as francolin, quail, pheasant, and chukar. We can hop in my truck and drive the roads---very little hiking is necessary. Keep me posted re: your recovery progress. And speaking of recovery process....

I was injured pretty badly in a car accident a little over a year ago and the person that hit me [in San Diego] was an "undocumented" person with bare bones insurance. Her insurance company, Mercury, offered to pay my legal fees, my medical fees, and give me [hold your breath] $100 for pain and suffering. My injuries included a fractured wrist, grade 2 rotator cuff tears, severed nerve in right leg, grade 2 concussion with cognitive damage, and soft tissue injury in the neck, back, and hips. That's what happens when a Chevy Suburban going 45 mph rear-ends a Ford Ranger sitting at a red light. She was talking on her cell phone and never saw me. Well, my attorney has been battling those bastards for a year and finally, today, after physicians, physical therapists, and other pro's have testified, Mercury finally decided to pay off rather than go to court. After a year of physical therapy and the realization that some of my injuries are permanent, there came a day of judgement. I still need physical therapy, but there seems to be a light at the end of the tunnel. Hang in there, Uncle Ji.

To all of you who expressed concern for the earthquake victims in HI, many thanks. My only damages are financial. My hip hardly hurts anymore and that was probably due to old age as much as to falling during the quake.

Wow, Doc!

Just left Maui on Saturday before the quake. Sounds like you guys got the brunt of it... but glad to hear everyone came out still walking!

Best to you and all the great people of those islands. After my first visit, I'm definitely ready to go back!
