[attachment=37487:attachment]My captain took my son and I hunting on the California coast on Jan. 2. About 10:30 in the morning, we came upon a small herd. As we were glassing them and picking out the one we wanted, we almost got busted by a coyote that popped up over the bank! Fortunately, he ran off into the woods and not back down the hill toward the pigs. The weather was spectacular. 65 degrees with the wind in our face. He only made it about 60 yards from the first shot. He dressed out at 63 pounds. What a hunt! My son and I are both hooked!!!!!

Rifle. We want to eventually get to bows, but need to learn the basics first.

I started hunting with a bow. This was my first year and I did not get anything. Had I been rifle hunting, I could have filled my pig tag and at least one of my deer tags without a problem. It may be tougher in the beginning, but you will learn more faster hunting with a bow. The transition to rifle will be a breeze. However, starting with a rifle does not give you any distinct advantage once you switch to a bow...you still have to learn a different technique (if you can get close enough with a bow, you can switch to anything and be successful). So if you want to hunt with a bow, just go for it. Take a rifle along if you want. Your hunting skills will be better for it. JMO.

That said, nice pig and congrats to you both.
