CELEBRATE THE HERONS



Pontoon boat excursions ($15), bird walks and wildflower hikes, along with children's activities, will be among the attractions this weekend at the 15th annual Heron Festival and Wildflower Brunch at Clear Lake State Park in Kelseyville.

The Clear Lake State Park Visitors Center will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The Wildflower Brunch will be from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday ($15, reservations required). Boat trips will be offered by reservation from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The Nature Fair is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday. Most activities are free.

SCOUT OUT ORIENTEERING



Why not discover orienteering as an inexpensive form of recreation for the entire family? Instruction is available from Gold Country Orienteers club members who will be on hand at an orienteering meet Sunday at River Bend Park in Rancho Cordova.

Registration will be from 9 a.m. to noon. Beginner, advanced beginner and intermediate courses will start between 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. River Bend Park (formerly Goethe Park) is off Highway 50 at the Bradshaw Road exit. Cost is $6 general, $5 for members. Parking fee is $5.

The nonprofit conservation organization California Waterfowl will hold its gun safety day for women and children from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 2 at the Cordova Shooting Center, 11551 Douglas Road, Rancho Cordova.

Geared for ages 10 and older, the event will teach visitors about conservation, gun safety, archery, rifle and shotgun shooting techniques, and wild-game cooking.

The $30 fee includes equipment, materials and lunch. Reservations are required. There is a $5 lunch option for dads and drivers.

Anglers, hook your monster trout and a chance of winning a pontoon fishing boat or a professional striper trip for two – just two of the prizes that will be handed out at the fourth annual Trout Derby from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 2 at Collins Lake in Yuba County. Hosted by William Jessup University, the derby costs $35 per person general, free for ages 15 and younger. The gate fee is $2 per person; $6 for boat launch.
