DAVIS BIRDING TOUR
Yolo Basin Foundation docents will point out white-faced ibis, American white pelicans and other feathered friends of the city of Davis wetlands during a free guided tour from 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday.
To participate, meet before 9 a.m. at the gate in front of the city's wastewater treatment plant, east of the Yolo County landfill on Road 28H.

YOUTH FISHING DERBY
Wrangle up your budding anglers and bring them to Granite Regional Park (on Ramona Way in Sacramento) for the Gone Fishin' Derby, 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday.
Geared for youths ages 16 and younger, the sixth annual event features a casting competition and other fishing contests with children's prizes, face painting and a photo booth, and free refreshments. The Department of Fish and Game will offer a fishing class and provide fishing poles.

SIERRA INSTITUTE TOURS
• The Maidu History of Indian Valley Tour, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, will be led by Mountain Maidu historian and language teacher Farrell Cunninghan.
• Learn about the wild salmon population during the Salmon of Deer Creek Tour, 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Aug. 8. Tours are $45 (includes transportation and lunch). To register: www.sierrainstitute.us.
TALKING FISH
No bites? Geology professor Dr. Tim Horner will address the decline of the salmon and steelhead on the American River as part of a presentation on "Where Did All of the Fish Go?" at the California Fly Fishers Unlimited meeting Tuesday.
A fly-casting clinic and fly-tying demonstration with club members will precede the meeting at 6:15 p.m., followed by the meeting at 7 p.m. It will be held at Camp Pollock (Boy Scout Camp), 1501 Northgate Blvd., Sacramento.

SHOOTING-STAR CAMPOUT
Experience a show worth staying up all night. Bring the family camping at Squaw Valley's High Camp to watch shooting stars during the Perseid meteor shower on Aug. 12.
Campers will be able to take the cable car to High Camp starting at 5 p.m. Viewing for the meteor shower will start at 10 p.m.
Cost is $65 general, $45 ages 15 and younger (includes the use of telescopes, High Camp activities, campsite, continental breakfast).
