Time to buy new hunting license

It's time to buy your new hunting license and apply for tags to hunt big game in California. It's a sure bet licenses and tags will cost more than last year.

Also, now is the time to check your hunting gear. Be sure to look and see if you left any doves in your hunting vest from last year. Does your gun need cleaning? Did you remember to clean it after the season was over last year? Does it need repair? Now is the time to check on these things so you will be ready Sept. 1 when dove season opens.

Desert Wildlife Unlimited's game bird plots look better than ever. Mourning and white-winged dove are already building rapidly in the area around Niland to feed on the ripe seed heads. I'm also seeing a strong population of doves in the rest of the Valley feeding in harvested wheat fields that haven't been worked up yet.

If you have guests coming from out of town who will need rooms on opening day, now is the time to book them. Most of the rooms in Brawley and Calipatria may already be spoken for, but there is brand new Motel 6 that just opened in Westmorland. It has plenty of rooms available for the Sept. 1 opener.

Corvina fishing is still slow but most of the action continues in the canals, where anglers still catching nice stringers of channel and flat-head catfish.
