Hey guys I would like to take my 11 year old on a pig hunt and I have only done it myself one time 30 years ago. I was hoping you could give me some reputable outfitters in CA that I could call. One guy I talked to said he hunted with an outfit called Camp 5 and that it was a great time. Anyone heard of them before? Thanks for any suggestions.

I have hunted with Camp 5 three times and it is a pretty good setup. Everytime I hunted with them it was either in January or Feb which can be tough with the weather. I think anytime from May to July would be really good down in that area.

They have a really nice house to stay in with lots of room.

Have fun and Good Luck,

Augnmike,

Rifle or Archery?

When asked this question before, several times, I only have two answers to give. For rifle, I have hunted with Eldon Bergman out of Templeton/Paso Robles and for bowhunting I mostly go to Choppers place (www.birdsandboars.com). I have had success with both. With Eldon you'll do a lot of driving around in a truck and some brush busting. He's a real hoot to hang out with and I like 'em. Now if archery is the weapon of choice then Choppers place is awesome. It's a semi-guided hunt on some of the best hunting grounds in California. Chopper's a good guy and I highly recommend his outfit.

Good luck and let us know what you decide to do and how it goes.

Augnmike,

Camp 5 has a great reputation, and you'd probably be pretty happy with them. There are a handful of other guides in the same general area (Paso Robles to King City). You can click here or just click the Hunting Outfitter and Guide reviews link at the top of the page.

Make sure you speak with the guide in advance, to let him know you're planning to bring a junior and to let him know what you're looking for in the hunt (e.g. spot and stalk, using dogs, etc.), and also to let him know if there are any special considerations, such as limited mobility.

Good luck!

One other thing to consider is the fact that your son can not legally hunt big game in California till he turns 12.

Yup,
I thought what Chopper thought. Dang it great minds think alike! 12 years old to
hunt big game in CA.
You can go to a shoot-and-pay place if waiting isn't your thing.
If you wait there are plenty of options for a guided hunt.

Bow hunt--Choppers if you can get a group together, or go on a JHO hunt.

Rifle-- I've hunted w/Eldon Bergman, MartyRoventsein, Don Ingalls and and their assistant/associates. Orso described the hunt accurately.

The hunts can vary in price. Find out what the guide offers for the fee.
Some have cabins and provide meals where as some will let you stay on the grounds and camp, while others you will need to hotel, etc.

Good luck.

Wow! great answers thanks very much you guys. I totally forgot abut the age thing since he has been hunting ducks with me since he was 9, but he will be 12 in February so maybe I will take the advice of going May to July and make it a birthday present. Orso, it would be a rifle hunt since we have not got into the bow hunting yet. So it sounds like Camp 5 might work for us after his twelfth birthday. I seem to remeber something about time of year being significant to the way the animals will taste, is that true? If so will May be a good month?

If you go to Camp 5 in May, the barley should be close to topping our depending on the rain we get this winter. If the barley is right the hogs taste just fine. I don't think that the feed the hogs are eating affect the taste as much as it would a deer.

If you are in a hurry to get him out and dont mind a high fence. JCA (Jim Cox) out of Salinas has plenty of hogs. Almost 100% guarantee shot.
