It's for real. What a shame! BS. I know I'm writing. Typical Ca F&G mismanagement. I hope that JHO "DFGELK" shows up here with some legit reasoning. Ed F

3. Modifications To The Regulations Pertaining To The Owens Valley Tule Elk Hunt:
a. Establish two additional hunt periods
In an effort to issue more tags in zones that are currently exceeding herd management
levels such as Bishop and Tinemaha, two new hunt periods will be established. Tule
elk within each zone typically concentrate in a small part of each zone which in turn
concentrates hunters. By keeping the number of hunters to a small level in each period,
hunters are more likely to have a safe, quality hunt within each zone. Current hunt
periods start in November and end in early December. Two (new) hunt periods will
begin in mid September and early October (Appendix 1).
b. Eliminate Owens Valley archery only tule elk hunt
Eliminating the Owens Valley region-wide archery only hunt is part of the overall
changes in this hunt area (Appendix 1).[/
b]
c. Add muzzleloader hunts
As part of the overall changes within the Owens Valley tule elk hunts the proposed
regulations establish a muzzleloader only hunt for the Bishop and Lone Pine tule elk
hunts during the first period (Appendix 1).
d. Eliminate mandatory orientation
Eliminate the mandatory orientation for the Owens Valley tule elk hunts. The
6
information that is presented to the hunters during orientation is the same information
that is part of the package that is mailed to the hunter with their tag. The other
information is included in the hunting regulation booklet and the DFG webpage.
Hunters seeking additional regulatory information during the orientation are currently
referred to Fish and Game law enforcement personnel. Orientations require substantial
time from Fish and Game employees and the same information can be passed onto the
tag holder in a written or electronic format (Appendix 1).

Oh hell yeah, I'm writing a letter. Sucks donkey ding dong! Ed, is CBH all over this? i sure hope so. If they want to trim herd number fine, but don't do so at the expense of hunting opportunity. That is just plain dumb! Add more cow rifle tags or something.

I’m upset about this and I’m one of the few that had the opportunity to be on this hunt. When Ca F&G started these (Owens Valley & N/E Ca archery only) hunts I attended a B&C measuring clinic in Bishop. The F&G biologist in charge of the elk program at that time, Jon Fisher, was at that class. He told the five CBH guys there, that the success of the archery only elk hunts would depend on the amount of interest (applicants), not the number of elk taken. It was a success. High interest, for a very unique hunt. Now it’s gone. The document is 186 pages and it says it’s up for public review and comment until April 9th. Here is where to find the document DFG

The document says that they are adding a zone specific archery season for the Independence zone after the rut (sept 8, unknown # of tags). The Independence herd is the smallest herd and was my last choice to hunt. There were no Independence tags last year because of too few elk. Explain that!

I contacted several CBH officials and none of them are aware of the proposed changes. At the annual CBH state meeting in January the CBH legislative team meets with F&G to discuss bowhunting opportunities in Ca. From what I know, these changes were not brought up to CBH. I was also told that if it’s in writing (186 pages) it might as well be written in stone, public comment or not!

e-mail them, call them, write them… If I had max points I'd be really pissed!!

Public comment e-mail wildlifestrategy@dfg.ca.gov
head elk biologist Joe Hobbs @ 916-445-9992 JHO’s “DFGELK”
Inyo county biologist Alisa Ellsworth @ 760-872-1173

This could have been you!!!

I'm fightin' mad over this. Yeah I'm a max point holder too. So Ed, from your perspective, this happened because of not enough interest (applicants) for the archery hunts? That is hard to understand. I wrote an email but what else can I do.? This is flat out wrong! I want a logical explanation at the very least.

I only started shooting a bow 3 years ago, because I always wanted to & to get an Elk with a bow. My daughter started shortly after me & is a tack driver!
<
She is not yet old enough to even apply for this hunt, but if we lose this fight she will never have a chance. Are they trying to chase away the new hunters? California is trying to kill another dream,(hunt). Call all your buddies!!! Archers or not to write the DFG.

I slept on this and am still really freakin pissed off. Who can I call? I want an explanation. There is no phone number on the contact info page. I know I won't be listened to but I may drop a line on Broddick just to make me feel better. I just think it is flat out wrong for the DFG to even propose such things without explaining their reasoning.

Ya......... It's just not right......... So, are they saying there is more interest in muzzleloader over archery?

And what's up with that Independance herd? Ranchers? or did they move into other herds? or BS

That don't add up. I've been a bowhunter since I was 16, I'm 44 now, and I took up muzzleloader only 3 years ago because I saw the draw odds were better for muzzy hunts than bowhunts.

This is hard to believe. I know many local bowhunters who were thrilled when this hunt 1st started. I'm not sure everyone around here is aware of this proposal, so I'm trying to get in touch with the Eastern Sierra Archery Club president.
