Here's the story.

(KUTV) For almost an hour, Saturday afternoon, a huge bull elk had Lloyd Jacobsen riveted on a ridgeline east of Fillmore. Lloyd’s used to waiting; he had been waiting a long time just to be here.

"Yeah, this is something I have been trying to do for at least 20 years. I have put in since 1985 trying to draw a limited entry tag," said Lloyd Jacobsen of Lehi, drew Pahvant elk tag.

A neighbor and friend, Brad Miller had spotted the big bull as he hiked toward camp thru a deep canyon. Two hours later, with Lloyd in position and another friend bugling and cow calling, they were looking at the big bull. He was held up in dense timber, raking a big Quakie and bugling his defiance to other bulls on the ridge.

"He is straight on with me, so I have got the Quakie, him and his horns and that is all I can see," said Jacobsen.

"Lloyd has got ice in his veins. He sat on this bull for thirty minutes with a finger on the trigger just waiting for that moment," said Paul Pennie who helped bugle the elk.

The trophy Lloyd took late that afternoon is nearly perfectly symmetrical and massive. Preliminary and unofficial measurements make this the biggest elk ever taken in Utah.

"We sat down for the longest time and just couldn't believe what we were looking at," said Jacobsen.

"We sat there until ten o'clock at night, in the dark, didn't talk a lot, just sat there, ‘cause this is something you look at. This animal, he is very special. It is something to be a part of," said Pennie.

"Twenty years ago, you would never see an animal like this in the state of Utah and just in the first week of the hunt this year, two of these 400 class bulls, and maybe a state record already claimed," said Doug Miller.

A mandatory 60 days must past before the big bull with a net of 414 inches can be officially scored. Record or not, Jacobsen says he's happy.

"This is the icing on the cake, a once in a lifetime hunt," said Jacobsen.

Two weeks earlier, Dave Martin shot video of another big bull wallowing in a mud hole, all part of the mating ritual. Half an hour later, bow hunter Eric Christensen of Cedar City made his shot.

It was near dark and they waited until the following morning to try to track the bull.

"This is the wallow where the bull was in. You can actually see where he was laying down, his body marks and that," said Christensen.

Eric found his bull, scoring somewhere in the range of 380, within fifty yards.

Bow hunter John Caruso was not so fortunate, hunting in the Book Cliffs on a conservation tag purchased at an SFW banquet. A bull caught them off guard.

"He was broadside when I shot but he jumped the arrow and turned and the arrow hit him in the rear," said Caruso.

They tracked the bull for a mile thru two canyons but never gave up. It is that kind of determination that drives a bow hunter.

"I am happy. It was a tough hunt. It is about on par with the quality of the bulls up here. There are some better bulls, but I am pleased. Thanks you guys. Good archery Bull. I mean…thanks," said Caruso.
