Got up to the ranch yesterday and cruised around.... didn't see anything moving but did notice a lot of fresh rooting in one valley, clearly a herd as they'd torn up a big area next to a creek. I had some errands to run mid day, returned to the ranch around 4 and headed to the ridge to watch the valley. No more than 10 minutes later I saw a small brown pig wander out of the thick brush... followed by another... and another... total of a dozen or so. I headed down the ridge and got to within about 100 yards of the group, who were all rooting around in the same area I'd seen in the morning. I picked a nice big sow and dropped her with my -06, then as they all scattered another similar sized one ran by me about 50 yards away and I dropped her too.
Big fat girls, 210 and 240 lbs. Of course this was just at dusk and I was by myself so quite a project to get them dressed and skinned in the dark!
Kind of strange, last year there were hardly any pigs on my place (I got none all season). This year I've gotten four already and it's only early Dec. Spring is usually the best, could be a busy one!
