I am working on some DeLorme topo maps of the area, so hopefully I will have some copies for ya'll.

Any ideas on camping areas? This area sucks for camping, unless you want to pay $20 a night a Laguna CG. We could have several people to a camp site to reduce costs and they do have showers. There IS some BLM land near Julian.

Not sure on camping. My wife wants to take the kids camping any ways so I can make her happy as well as go hunting. BLM land is good also but this time of year you will be hard pressed for a fire permit I think.

I'm terms of logistics; I don't know that part of CNF all that well, is there a specific area y'all think would be more productive vs less? Any land bordering farm/ag where they could be going in/out?

I'm thinking if the topography is right, we could do a modified push (as buckfever mentioned); post some shooters on high ground, flush em out of deep cover/canyons. I'm not afraid of getting steep and deep in the nasty

Also; anyone out there going to bring wives/family to camp out? Might be easier for me to get two full days if the wife can get out too.

I'm okay with reserving a couple of sites for a paid CG if it's close enough to where we want to be, but I'm also happy to bivouac/dry camp off a dirt road too...

William heise park off of Pine Hills Rd is about a mile or two to Eagle Peak Rd and the CNF. If we are hunting the River drainage, I highly suggest NOT going in from Inja Memorial......Eagle Peak is so much better....

Also, I believe you can camp in the CNF as long as you have an adventure pass. There is a nice little pond off Eagle Peak Rd in the CNF....maybe we can camp there. How many hunter are we up to now? I know I will be bringing two other hunter with me...I believe the pond is in the area that the forest depratement had on the maps with the pig locations......


Been to the CNF 3 times in the last two months....have not seen much but quail, deer, turkeys, rattlesnakes....everything but pig. Going to keep on trying.....

Lake Henshaw is a bit far from the area where supposivley the pigs are....there are a lot more campgrounds closer if you want a campground....

Yeah, we can pitch a tent on forest land, but NO FIRES. That was my main concern - no fires and no crappers. Makes it a bit more unpleasant than a campground setup. But if thats more appealing to the group we can just set up a dry camp without amenities where ever we want. The William Heise county park CG is the same cost ($19) as Laguna and it has showers as well, but it is much closer. I dont know about vacancies in the CGs this time of year.

PLUS -

The forest adventure pass isnt necessary in all areas of the CNF - ONLY HIRA require the pass when parking. Here's the link to the HIRA map:

Oh...thanks for letting me know about the HIRA areas, I bought a one day pass the last time I went to the San Diego River, but guess I did not need to. I was just about to buy a year pass....I will hold off on that now.....

The only problem with Eagle Peak Rd is there is lots of private property in the area so you really MUST know exactly where your at and where you hunting...but I guess that is a given huh.....

Well, I just looked up reservations at William Heise, it is fully booked that weekend, so that place is out. I will keep searching....I know there are other campgrounds in the area....

Chef , the pond in your picture is at Kessler Flat . Two other water sources are in canyon behind your picture. Good flat, multi-vehicle camp spot down 4wd road just past your pond photo. Access to canyon just before your pond photo also. Picture perfect for a push downhill with blockers at bottom of canyon. Pushers could also rely on those parked at bottom for ride back to vehicles on E. Peak Rd. This is a good location for this type of op. Downside- easy accessability weekend hikers/campers. Cold camp of course. Fires only on a campstove. Don't matter to me.

By the way, don't under estimate Lake Henshaw/Palomar foothills .....:hog chewing:

Thanks Mezcan...yah i was thinking that would be a good spot to camp and hunt, and I think I know where your talking about about the other water sources too...when we hunted at kessler flats, we went across the road and headed down south into a valley....So it would be nice to go check out the north of that area.I totally don't under estimate Palomar foot hills, seen lots of Turkey there..... but was just thinking it might be a bit far from the San Diego river drainage....but yah, if everyone wants a campground...that would be one to go to since William Heise is booked solid. Lake Henshaw would be good if people wanted to bring there familys..but not sure what it cost to camp there. I'm fine with dry camping at Kessler.......

Unfortuatly I drive a tiny yaris...hahahah...so 4 wheel drive is out of the question for me. I could always camp up at the flats and hike down in the morning....

Eagle peak rd. has gotten a lot of attention from hog hunters in the last two years. This is JUST ONE area. There are several other areas that should be scouted as well.

People who have said they are going already:
Mezcan, ChefTodd, Ducks 2001 & dad, Tail hunter, Kevin S, Phil80 (I think), BADbuckfever. That's 8 so far.

Still time for any other JHOers to be part of this historic event.

Ok mezcan, I understand exactly what you are talking about. Sounds like a plan that is do-able and could produce results. Set the blockers/shooters at the bottom and the others start at the top and sweep down and around.

WE NEED EVERYONE TO BRING AND WEAR SOME BLAZE ORANGE FOR THIS. NO ACCIDENTS!!! Pigs dont see so well anyway.

Probably just see some huge deer though, it always happens.

BADBuckfever I am going. I have camped lake Henshaw before not far from were I live they raised there prices to $20 a night. I have seen some wilderness adventure areas near there also.

I checked out Lake Henshaw Resort's web site. About 20 miles from kessler flat. It is $20 per site/night w/ showers, store, restaurant/bar(?). Only 4 people per site. I'm still waiting for a reply on the parking situation (sounded like one vehicle per site????) Thats only $5 per head for fires, showers and wild turkeys crusing your camp site. I don't think they take reservations for tent camping. Some decent reviews on "Yelp."

Just another option.

I think they were talking about the full weekend. Where ever we end up....I will not be rolling in until about 9 pm on Friday due to my work schedule....unless they let me off work early, but I doubt that.....
