Kevin, my wife might come as well (depending if we find a sitter for the kids), but she only has tags for next year and her license is for July as well...so she will be glassing......but come July.....she will be ready to go....
Im rootin for you guys. I have a suggestion. In addition, if you could find a houndsman in your area to assist your chances could be increased significantly. Especially in the heavy brush.
Hey everyone, Thanks for all of the help with this. We are laying some ground work for future success!
I have one main concern - camping in or near the canyon we intend to hunt. This is not a wise move at all. Pigs have very good hearing and I refuse to jeopardize the hunt by camping near there the night before the hunt. I hope you guys understand what I am saying. I think being in that area (driving in, setting up a camp w/ possible children involved) is an ignorant thing to do. Dont take this wrong, but we have to be smarter than our prey. Pigs are smart, we have to be smarter. I don't recommend we go in there unless you are SUPER QUIET from the moment you open your vehicle door to get out. That means whispering and just easing the door closed till it latches. DO you get what I am saying? We dont want the squirrels to even know we are there. We should be invisible - think GHOST and your on the right track.
Think about it. It totally defeats the effort to camp in the very canyon you want to hunt. This isnt personal we just need to be smart about what we are doing. I am putting lots of time and effort into organizing this and we need to use our skill and experience to guide our decisions.
I don't want to be divisive, but lets work on some other options please.
:hog chewing:Wherever this hunt takes place , I am going in Friday afternoon to check conditions of trail ( above and below in case of Kessler being choice) , road condition into campground (if I decide to rough it) , and will check on people density at camping area. Camping area I mentioned in previous post, near Kessler, is down a short 4wd road and about a 1-2 mile hike to get to BLOCKING positions in our proposed PUSH/BLOCK hunt scenario.
CAMPING will not be in immediate area of hunt. (USFS atlas page 25, USGS Santa Ysabel Quadrangle 7.5 minute topo map ).
There is a good chance hunters not associated with this website will be out there Saturday(June 25) , EARLY. Setting up camp Friday(June 24)
for those that can come out to get a lay of the land just makes sense.
Showing up in the dark on Saturday morning (June 25) with no knowledge of area you are in is a little naive , considering the terrain we are talking about.
Consider this. The blockers will have to walk over a mile , in the dark , QUIETLY , to get into position. That walk will probably start at about 4:30 a.m. to get into position by shoot time.
The pushers will probably start about shoot time at top of area. Won't have to be quiet because our goal is to push ANYTHING with four legs down the hill.
Just talked to forest service in Ramona. Camping in CNF outside an established campground REQUIRES A PERMIT. No charge but must be picked up at USFS office.
mezcan, I am not concerned about putting info out there - we need help to kill the pigs. If someone wants to hunt an area that is right next to a main road they should be ready for people to take notice. This is NO secret spot - it was announced in that weirdo reporter's article who went with Julian resident "Marc" to hunt pigs. They said "go to Eagle peak rd. you might get lucky." They put the spotlight on this area already before we said anything. I dont really even think this spot is worth spending much time on - IT'S TOO EASY TO ACCESS.
Nothing has been finalized, we are still hashing these things out. We still have a week to finalize our plans. Keep it up! I am also finding more info on pig locations.
Is anyone surprised?; I haven't heard back from anyone at the Cuyamaca Rancho State Park.
I think hunters are like Kryptonite to these state and federal employees.
Let me know how easy it is after your hike in and hike out. 600 foot elevation drop in a quarter mile is not easy up or downhill. Doesn't matter if start point is adjacent to a major FS road , few people attempt this.
Somebody mentioned Mendenhall Valley on Palomar Mtn. I tried to get in there for turkey but was turned back by a dozen no trespassing signs. You can walk in from Palomar Mtn Divide Rd, if it's open from backside of Palomar(Temecula side). That would be about a three mile hike from hell ,over 2 ridges and through Barker Valley before reaching Mendenhall Valley. Only area in Mendenhall not private is extreme Southeast corner .
Cuyamaca won't call you back.
Henshaw area. Two or three areas within 5 -15 minutes of Henshaw resort.
Boulder Creek rd ? It's off of Eagle Peak but I haven't scoped those two areas out yet.
Tailhunter and I are checking zeros on our rifles tomorrow at the range. Wherever I go , I'll be ready.
Oh , yeah . One more thing. After my last hike near Kessler, I was so sore i could barelly walk for two days. Ain't no picnic.
I saw some one asking about fishing. Henshaw is great for Crappie on the dock. Get there early and fich through the flats with live bait. You will kill them. Catfish is a good one there all year also. Not sure on trout water always looked to murky for trout I would want to eat.
I will be taking a day off and can meet up early to set camp. Let me know were, I will be rolling in my 4 door Jeep. Only thing it lacks is a winch so we can get any were we need to go to scout. Henshaw is nice as they allow fires but it is for the most part a dust pit.
Nickmetz....William Heise park is full that weekend, I already checked into it. So Henshaw might be a good idea. It would be easy for everyone to find..thats my suggestion....and when we get to the gate at henshaw just ask where the JHO campers are...and get a couple sites together......its probably about a 25 to 30 minute drive to Eagle peak from there.....
BadBuckfever....since you are pulling this all together, just let me know where you guys are camping and my buddy Jason and I will be there. Thanks
Todd
Looking forward to hunting with all of you guys....
boulder creek has limited to no pigs from what I can tell. a buddy and i frequent there and haven't seen anything yet. no signs. up and around K as mentioned above a buddy has taken a shot on two seperate occassions on one without being able to connect. Last time I was up around that area it was very thick. should be good times either way.
There is camping and fishing at lake cuyamucca. It is about 20 minute drive to any of the pig locations . It is closer than Henshaw.
plus it is very close to Julian if your wives want to go somewhere.
From Cuyamacca you can drop down Engineer rd and be at one end of pig country by Cedar Creek or drive through Julian and come over to Eagle peak.Either way it is reasonably close.
