My research will focus on documenting the history of local saltwater fishing so that we can better understand the status of our fisheries today. Whether a fishery is declining, stable, or increasing, this information is very important for management, and needs to be addressed from a historical perspective. I'm searching for WON issues from pre-1985 and 2000-present (I already have 1985-2000). This research project will be published in an effort to ensure that recreational fishing remains as a significant part of our cultural heritage for generations to come. Lyall,

I am fisheries biologist for the California Department of Fish and Game and that information, back further than your 1985 date has been pulled directly from recreational fishing counts as well as commercial log book entries. This information has been collected and tabulated since the 1940's. It essentially has driven bag limits and size limits for quite sometime. Factor in all the life history data for all the targeted species, conducted by nearshore programs from UCSB, California State University Northridge, Long Beach, and to some extent, Scripps, as well as others have established age and size at first maturity, which directly drives resource seasons, take limits and size limits.

If you are looking for more inforamtion on this data base, I can put you in contact with the right Department personnel.
