Are there any ranches / private land that allows hunters to access without having to pay for a guide? I am looking for someplace for Memorial Weekend and unless I can find a place to hunt I will be heading to FHL again. I don't mind spending a few bucks but $500+ is a little much right now. Is there anyplace for maybe half of that around northern CA anymore???

None that I know of for the $250 range. I have heard rumors of 350 but don't know of any places myself. I'd be out a little more at the $250 price point than the 450+ mark.

It seems that $400 is about the going rate to hunt a pig on private land. And I doubt that many places would allow an unguided hunt as they don't want any liability issues, or having their livestock shot. You've got to ask yourself what your time is worth, not to mention the fuel costs of repeated trips to FHL, or Los Padres or any other public place. Personlly I'd save up the money and go to a respected place where you have a much better chance of getting a pig.

For $150 more in a JHO sponsored hog hunt, nothing beats Tejon with about 80% to 90% chance of sighting and about 50% success rate.

wtpops - Where you've been? Have not seen your posts for sometime. Thanks again for the new addiction. My son is also into it and had overtaken me in skills. And I even had a formal lesson.

WTPOPS- to answer your question rifle.

I sort of figured I would hear these responces but you don't know until you ask. I saw a few advertisments on the web for unguided hunts starting at $400 which is a joke when you can go on a guided hunt for $500. I guess that is capitalism at work!!!

Did this outfit give you a choice between fair chase and hunting with a dog?

Cedar Canyon Ranch is in Tehachapi, Kern County???, California. Just on the northern border of the Tejon Ranch. Cedar Canyon Ranch buys the hogs from some ranch I believe in Canada. They are I believe Russian strain. They are wild and according to the people who hunted the ranch and posted here at JHO, it is hard to get them with archery and not easy either with rifle. 'Nuff said.
