When I was a kid we used to belong to the american sportsman club and we used to hunt a ranch called Peach Tree. I heard that the american sportsman club is no longer (or at least out west here). Does anyone know who has that property now? If I remember right it was somewhere between Coalinga and King city and bordered up to an old guys ranch named pfiefer.

Just curious

Thanks

Chris,

I don't know who has it but I remember hunting it when I was in the American Sportsmans Club too. As you probably recall it was like 40,000 acers and was devided up into something like 6 areas (areas A-F). I loved hunting that ranch, got a deer and a pig off of it (my 1st for both). I'd be interested in knowing who has it and if it is somehow accessable for hunting now also.

yes I remember the ranch was very big. It holds alot of memories for me. We lived in Stockton and when we belonged to the club we were gone almost every weekend. My dad got a couple of deer out of there and his buddy got a Ram out of there that had crossed over from anoth club that bordered Peach tree (that really ruffled the feathers with the other club). I remember all the fossil rocks I collected as a kid. There were alot of pigs there. I had alot of fun with my dad there and since he passed away years ago I have allways wondered about that area and if it was accessable.

I was wondering if it was leased out to a club or if it was open to hunting for anyone. If so do you know what the cost is and how the pig hunting has been? I know it used to be real good but that was years ago.

Wilderness Unlimited had about 6000 acres of it for a couple years and lost the lease on it back around 2002 or 2003. I was a member then but did not get a chance to hunt it. Heard it was good for both pig and deer. A buddy of mine got a pig from there. I too also wonder who has it now.

My dad and about 20-25 guys hunted the Mee Ranch(Peachtree) from 1961 to around 1971. I was fortunate to take my first two bucks off the ranch. It was unbelievable. At the time the Peachtree Valley had alfalfa, barley, and safflower and the hunting had to be seen to be believed. We would see 50-100 deer a day and pass up numerous bucks. Our members would take about 30 deer a year off the ranch. The pigs were all over especially on the Mustang grade side of the property. Mr. Mee then made the costly mistake of allowing American Sportsman in and they pretty much shot the place up after about 3-4 years. I understand that there were over 100 bucks checked out the first year AS had the ranch and over 80 the second year. I have no reason to doubt the numbers as we knew the ranch foreman pretty well at the time.

All the neighboring rancher were upset with Mr. Mee for allowing the ASC group to lease the property and for good reason. Too many deer taken, not to mention the deer taken and not reported which many carcasses were found after deer season, off the place and it hurt the outlying ranchs also.

Sad but true.

Brknarrow - I forgot the ranch hands first name, but wasnt his last name something like Nayswonger, pardon my spelling. I remember when you shook his hand you lost yours. He used to go quail hunting on the Mee ranch with my dad once in a while. He was really nice to us kids when we used to see him.

You might be right about the area never really recovering from being pounded for so many years, but I do remember that Tom Mee told me back in 1982 that he really did not want ASC in there any longer but he needed the money badly. I believe he said that ASC was paying him about $ 100,000 a year to lease the ranch and that was a lot of money back then, especially when a ranch close to the Mee Ranch of about 5000 was sold in 1992 for $ 800,000.00.

I was close to leasing the small section of the Mee Ranch off to the right going up Mustang grade that bordered the small Phyffer area, you know which I'm talking about, when the ASC lease was going to expire, but thats when Mee went belly up and lost the ranch. We didn't want to lease the whole ranch like Tom wanted us to because I wanted to just hunt with 4 or 5 other buddies and that little 2500 acre section had some real toads in there.

We tried to contact Dr. Singleton many times after he got the ranch but no dice.
