I was wondering what you guys with these cameras usually have your quality settings at?

I have been using mine set at SHQ,then I decided to take a few pics with all the settings to see if I could tell the difference.I could not tell the diference between them.I was wondering about this cause I could put alot more pics on my memory card with the HQ instead of the SHQ.If there's not enuff difference I will use HQ because with my 128mb card I can take like 247 pics.

Have you guys noticed much difference?

Don't have that cam but mine is also 2.1MP resolution. It calls its settings "small" "medium" and "high" for jpg format. I use the high setting which gives me the option of making smaller files later. These are 1.2meg files and will go 8x10 with great results. If you need extreme quality for commercial print purposes you can use TIF (mine are 6meg files) format. I havn't used that format yet, since I can do the same thing with a scanner from a small high quality print if needed. Also, after you edit a TIF file you can save a copy as a jpg. With the cheap prices for the memory cards I don't see any need for taking low quality images.

By the way, how does the "image stabilazation" feature with the zoom work for you? I am considering getting the C-2100 since it would be much more versitile in the field than my 3x compact and looks like a great bang for the buck. WB

I have an Olympus D-490 and I set it in HQ 1200X1600 and my pictures turn out crystal clear. By using that setting I can still get 2 pictures per meg of memory on my smart media card and my picture quality doesn't suffer any. Just my experiance.

I run my Olympus 2100 in HQ. This gives me about a 500k image to work with. I tried using the .tiff and SHQ but don't see the need since most of my images go into email or on the net. If I was printing my images I would probably step up to SHQ. You use more memory space too so it's a trade off. I can fill one 128 meg media card in about an hour easily on a trip using HQ mode.

If you really want the best images for archiving shoot SHQ tiffs. That way you have the best image availble in your archive and you can edit that down for web, printing or email work,

Thanks for the help guys, I think I will try the HQ setting for a while and see how I like it. I went on a 2 1/2 week elk hunt last month and with my 128 mb card I was running out of memory towards the end of the hunt.I had to erase most of my landscape shots to get the animal shots.Hey maybe I will get another card for Christmas

Regarding just how many pixels you need: on one of the photography sites (Luminous Landscape, the guy specializes in landscapes) there was an article about pixels. Seems like the guy said you need something like 250 dpi to get a decent picture if you're going to print it, but the typical number for use on computer images is only 72 dpi. That's what I've found in my pictures, too. It's amazing how a picture can look good on the screen, but if you print it out, and there's not enough pixels there, it is REALLY blurry.

I use the HQ setting on my C3000 (2048 x 1536 pixels). 42 photos (about 700 kb apiece, jpeg format) on a 32 MB card is plenty for me.
