Here is a story about a Boar Cam that is wildly popular in Germany. While this is very cool, I am amazed that it is so popular in Germany. Check it out!

Here is the Yahoo.com story link:
Pig Brother - Yahoo.com

And here is the story itself:

BERLIN (Reuters) - A German Web site dubbed "Pig Brother" has attracted more than a million visitors in under two weeks with its 24-hour live Webcam coverage of a family of wild boar, the site's creators said Tuesday.

The site, launched in March by the German Hunting Protection League, offers day and night coverage of three males, three females and more than 50 offspring in an enclosure in their natural habitat of the Eifel mountains in western Germany.

"The boar live freely in a natural environment but it so happens that there is nearly always a boar in front of the camera," a spokeswoman for the league said.

The site was set up shortly after the start of the latest German series of the reality television show "Big Brother," which locks volunteers in a house and films their every move.

The boar site -- http://www.wildtiere-live.de -- attracted more than 1.5 million visitors and 400 guest book entries in its first two weeks. "We have microphones in the enclosure. The mating calls are very impressive," said the spokeswoman.

What is really funny about this, is that it is sponsored by the German Hunters Association.

I bet that would never happen in America, PETA would flip out too much!

German hunters present the nature online

Internet surfers can now pay a virtual visit to the forest thanks to the DJV, the German Hunting Association: Its web site www.wildtiere-live.de began broadcasting live footage of the forest in time for the rutting season in September 2003, and features images from an outdoor camera with zoom shots, panning shots and a directional microphone mounted in a game park of the Eifel region showing deer and wild boar in their element. Special servers process the live video to a live footage, multiply it and send it into the internet.

Depending on the season there will be different types of game to be watched year-round in their natural habitat from dawn till dusk – and this in the best possible quality of the footage. No matter whether the internet connection is ISDN or DSL.

Hear the call of the wild at home

There are moments of exciting action when the stags are roaring and their antlers crash together, and there are moments of joy when the young wild boars play and squeak in their first spring. But there are also quiet times waiting for the next interesting and lovely images - things are live, quite different from on television. It means waiting, having patience and looking forward to the next highlight. In that case the observer has the option to take his personal photos with the snap shot function.

But the website has much more to offer: There is a display of pictures and video sequences of the most impressive scenes. Many texts for adults and kids give information about the observed game, there is a newsletter, screen-backgrounds to download, and new functions will be continuously added.

The success of a high quality live-video entwined with informative and amusing texts has confirmed the concept of the German hunters' association: In the first four days about half a million users watched the red deer herd with the dream team Heinz and Agnes, with which the project had started. After a week more than one million observers had been recorded, and there were 2.2 million page views in a month. Though the rutting season is over for months, the interest in the live video is still high.

In the middle of March 2004 the camera location changed to the wild boars. From then on not only the video technology was rebuilt and enlarged, but also the information texts on the website www.wildtiere-live.de now focus on the wild boars as a main topic.

The intention of wildtiere-live

This innovative and ambitious DJV-site aims at fostering wildlife protection and allows adults and kids a unique view of the animal kingdom.

In today’s live style, there is not much room and time to get involved into nature. More often the visit to the next greater forest is both a problem of great logistics and time. And on weekends, with lots of people having the same ideas, watching animals and their behaviour is hardly possible.

Nature experience on screen – a contradiction? Sure, a webcam cannot replace a morning in the forest. But it can awake interest and understanding for our native wildlife without trivialising or sensationalising.

Humans protect only the things they know and understand! For this reason, wildtiere-live.de contains special sites for kids, which can bring the forest into their playrooms and them to understand more about game.

Folks, I've found some discrepancy (sp) here. While yes we are watching, no doubt, wild boars on the net, they ARE NOT in their NATURAL ENVIRONMENT. Their environment is as natural as any animal AT THE SAN DIEGO ZOO!

I was watching the live video and just happened to notice about 6 people walking in very far background. they were slow and quite, single file. wearing regular clothes. no equipment. therefore, i'd have to say it's at a zoo. I also heard some type of loudspeaker announcement way in the background, when the volume was up really high. Watching the pigs is no less cool, but just understand someone didn't stalk into the lair of a truly wild pig at his own home and install a trail camera!!!
