I have a squeeler and a boss hawg call. They worked on other hunters. That's when I stopped using them. Maybe if I get to hunt somewhere less crowded....
The hog grunt call I've heard sounds like a buck (deer) grunt. Can't remember what the brand or name of it was though. Also, I've never really heard anyone having great success on calling hogs or if they even work at all. Heck I don't know anyone that uses them. Since pigs stay in herds most of the time or within a few hundred yards of each other, would these calls be very effective? There sometimes are the occasional stragglers wandering around, especially the young boars. It would be interesting to know if anyone uses them with success.
After hearing about some guys having success with them in Texas, I went ahead and ordered 2 calls from Haydel's (sp?).
I got the "Boss Hog" (grunt), and the "Pigglet in distress" (squeeler) calls.
I've had some success with both (keep reading!)....
Using the "Boss Hog" call, I once managed to call in an almost 'charging', BIG, BLACK Bull (male cow).... My friend (non-hunter) whom was with me climbed a nearby tree as if he had seen an African Lion or something.... The Bull was REAL MAD when he came in. He was stomping his front leg, and 'exhaling' FORCEFULLY out of his nose... Something that you would see in a 'Matador' movie.
Using the squeeler call, I've managed to call in coyotes in at least 2 occasions. One of those was in a very foggy day. The interesting part was that when I saw the coyote, he was sitting on a rock, staring at me calling, about 40 yards away.
On another occasion, I hiked into what I believed to be piggy country, waited for a little while, then used the squeeler..... Just about every living creature FLUSHED OUT of the area.... deer running in one direction, rabbits, birds, etc. Then, all was quiet.
Now, whenever I want to freak out my dogs (actually my wives Chihuahuas), I use the squeeler call.... FUNNY REACTIONS!!! Another use is when the neighbors dog is barking... "squeel squeel squeel", and he is quiet for the next half hour or so....
There is a guide in cen. Ca. that uses them. I gonna give him a call and ask for details. I'm taking my J13 javelina call (squeeler that sounds like a jack rabbit,) on the Tejon hunt. I won't use it unless I get busted and the hogs are moving out. That's how I used it to bring back a few javelina.
Bishop,
I have had limited succes with hog calls. I have 2 calls made by primos. One a squeeler and the other a grunt tube. I to have called in coyotes and other hunters. And, a few hogs. Usually I use the grunt tube to cover my own noise. I buy all my calls online at: http://www.gamecalls.net/.
Check it out. The prices are right and they ship fast.
AND-- be carefull of the other guy. When your in the woods hunting hogs and hear a grunt would you come running? I go and check it out, however; some will shoot at a sound in the bushes, not like anyone here would do. Mind your P's and Q's.
Good Luck!

CA pigs are very smart ,but I have used a call and had it work with so so results. I dont use them as a call , but more as to locate hogs in the thick stuff. It works some of the time. Also when you have some hogs in the thick stuff, Ill give a few grunts as I'm moving in on them,if the wind is right, and they don,t get wind of you, they think your just another hog. I'm not saying they work for sure, but it leads me to think they just might ,if the hogs are in the right mood and conditions are right.
Well thats my two cents about hog calls.
nextrodeo,
Way to funny! That is the call I use to call in hunters! It's the only call I have used that has never failed to work. AND, it's the only call I have NEVER heard called by someone else in the woods. Especially when I'm hot, tiered, and thirsty! Go Figure?

With my calling ability, you have nothing to worry about. I will surely drive those hogs right to you. So, be ready at all times.
At this exact time, in exactly two weeks, I should be pulling into the ranch office parking lot.
Items that you don't want to forget:
Shovel
Fire extinguisher
Rope
Also, when your truck is hot, check the tail pipe for excessive heat. That's what they will do at the fire station. The guy will use a rag, and grab your tail pipe and yell, "Squeel like a pig." (Woo hoo.) Then, he will check under the hood. Then, ask to see your shovel and fire extinguisher.
