Once I got back from Boston I couldn't wait to go hunting. On Monday of last week I ask my 76 yr old grandfather if he wanted to go pig hunting and without any hesitation he said yes. We headed for LPNF were I had seen some pigs 4 or 5 years ago. I couldn't get any sleep so I just hung out by the fire. At about 4 in the morning we started our hike. I didn't see much the whole day, the only mammals I saw was a few birds and a couple of squirrels. At about 4:30 pm I was glassing some open areas where I noticed something moving under a tree. I couldn't make out what it was due to the shadow of the tree so I decided to move in a little closer. Once I got within 800 yards I realized it was a pig. My heart rate sky rocketed and I knew I was to get closer before I could get a shot. I managed to get within 300 yards when a group of 6 or 7 more pigs joined this one pig. I was in shock at this point. All of the pigs were at least about 150 lbs.. I go within 150 yards when one of the pigs, a solid black one, winded me. I noticed that the pig was getting a little nervous so at this point I got myself in a better position. I drew my rile and as I was about to look threw the scope the pigs started to run, but not at full speed. I managed to pick one of them and placed the shot right in the neck. The pig dropped right there in its tracks.
Then the hard part began. Long story short I was about a mile away from the Jeep. I managed to find a 4x4 trial to get about 600 yards from the pig. I dragged it close enough to the Jeep as I could and then I winched it the rest of the way. I have never been that tired in my life. To date I have to saw this was the best pig hunt I have ever been on, not that it was a trophy pig, but the joy on my grandfathers face I will never forget.
