Hello, I'm in the market for another lever gun. I currently own a Marlin 30-30, but would like another rifle. Would you suggest a 35 remington, 44mag, or 45 long colt? Thanks

Any of those would work fine but don't give you much more range or versatility over your 30-30. With that battery I'd be looking for a Browning BLR in .308. Then you'd have short and longer ranges covered.

I have a Marlin 336 in 35 Rem that works great. I don't think that it will do anything better than your 30-30 though. If you're in it to buy a new gun, you may want to expand your vision beyond "low and slow". Pick up a 30-06 or .308 and enhance your hunting capablities.

If you want a levergun, the BLR is nice.
I have one and it shoots nice groups.
I believe it is still available in a long and short action.
It's not as light as it looks though.
A couple pig guides up in Central Cal have/had Savage 99s.

A lightweight and handy boltgun to consider is the model 7.

I think you asked the same question in the bear forum?

I briefly repeat what I said there. The handgun calibers are good for cowboy action shooting and plinking. They are not ideal for hunting. If you want a big slug gun, because you think it is fun, go with a government 45-70 or a .444 marlin. They will do the pork in, but don't buy you much over the 30-30, since penetration is the main issue with pigs.

I read and did a lot of research to find a light and versatile gun to take hunting here in CA. Pigs and bear were my main game in mind, along with dense cover deer. I ended up with a Winchester Model 94 30-30.

Again, for some fun, why not add a handgun and take it bear hunting, or like suggested by others, branch out into a higher powered rifle that gives you ability to go longer distance?

Yes I must also say I love my Marlin 30-30 and it is being used for Black Bear and Wild Pigs (although i havent seen a pig yet. lol). But if you looking for something different i say 30/06!!!

I like the idea of a .35 rem, although a .44 mag will kill pigs fine, and be fun to shoot.

As for a .444 Marlin compared to a 30-30...I'll take my Timber Carbine in .444 Marlin any day for any thing on four legs.

I would like to get a lever action chamberd the same as my .480 but that would be just to add to the collection of levers right next to my model 94.

I go to texas in spring for hogs and carry a 44Mag Ruger single action whilst hunting turkey's just for odd chance of a shot at hogs- when hunting hogs I use my custom Marlin 1895 in 45/70 with peepe sights and 350 gr rnd nose bullets

My hunting partner and I use a Winchester Ranger .44 and a Marlin .444. It's usually a coin toss as to who uses which but if the pigs are in close the .44 man gets the first shot. if they're a little further out the .444 man gets it. We have yet to see a pig, lol, but that is our system.

Calhunter,
That's pretty funny and true for me. I have a few rifles that one could take an elephant with but I haven't run across any elephants yet! Oh well, there fun to buy, shoot at the range, and make google eyes while there in the safe looking pretty.

Tree Doc, I can't say we haven't tried though, lol. We are going back out to San Luis Res. pretty soon with a guy who knows the area like the back of his hand so hopefully we will get lucky. But they do look awful pretty in the safe

Marlin 1895G or GS...because 45-70 has done it fine for over 130 years.

Puts a smile on my face every time I pull the trigger too.

Dave,
That Marlin 45-70 is a THUMPER-WHOMPPPPPPPER on both ends. I have the Marlin 45-70 rifle & it is built like a bank vault & has a silky smooth action. The yawning muzzle opening gives a ton of confidence & the 420 gr. ammo(Garrett) will bring down a buffalo. I love that thumper-whomppppper. 'Nuff said. larrysogla.

My good friend and gunsmih in AK was making Guide guns long before Marlin did. Mine is an 1895 45/70--Ported-18 1/2" barrel-arctic coating-peepsight-quick remove scope mounts-and custom checkering. kick much reduced and it makes a very nice saddle gun esp in bear country and a great pig gun.

I have seen some of their guns but gotta admit the price on most are a bit steep for me. The guy who did my stuff is in Fairbanks and trained in Germany. His shop is small and he is presently working on a few Wildcat cal. The take down Co Pilot would be nice in the confines of a Super Cub.
