I have a .444 Marlin that is really a joy to shoot. I'll see if I can connect with a hog on the 04-22 to 04-24 POR. 280 grain Cor Bons ought to really do the trick.
My 1st Rifle was a 300 Win Mag. The guy @ Wal-mart asked me what I planned on shooting with that thing since the deer are not that big in TX. I told him it was for "Home Defense", You know Burglar, Stray Cats and the occasional Cape Buffalo in the Garden, That got a good laugh out of him. I purchased it to hunt down in George West where a 3-500yd shot is normal. After sighting it in and putting 1/2lb of lead down range I traded it to my ex Bro-In-Law for his Savage .270 & $50.
The .270 has done me good, My Grandpa hunts Elk in Colorado with it! High velocity & relatively flat shooting long range. I have lost count of the Hogs, Javelinas, Coyotes, Bobcats, Rabbit & Squirrel Puffs (All you have left after hitting them w/a 270) Stray Dogs and Deer I have shot with it. Only drawback is it came with a Simmons 3x9x39 Scope. A 200yd scope on a 500yd gun. Most times in the field I would have to carry my S&W .357 for close or quick shots.
I was looking for a 30-30, something more portable, quick firing & larger shell capacity. New @ Wal-mart were Winchesters for $285. Most pawnshops were running around $265 when I spied something on clearance it said 35 Rem $239. It was a Mod 336CS had a very nice padded leather sling, no scratches and a 4x12x50 scope on it (500yd scope on a 150yd gun??) I spoke to the salesman and compared bullets..... 200gr 35 Rem or 180gr 30-30. I talked to the manager and she said the gun had been in Inventory almost 2 yrs and they needed to get rid of it. I got the Gun, padded gun case and a box of shells for $200!
Now I have a 500yd scope on my .270 and a 200yd Scope on my new 150yd gun! I hafta admit though, the 35 Rem shoots like throwing a brick downrange, It ain't going very far or very fast but it definately lands with a THUD! I have shot 3 hogs with it so far, 1st was point blank in the trap. 2nd was at 25yds on a dead run, hit a 70lb boar right behind the head and dang near decapitated him, 3rd was a running 90lb Hog @ about 70yds, Didn't lead him enough aiming for a neck shot the bullet caught and decimated the 3rd rib, obliterated the heart & lungs and left an exit hole almost 1" diameter depositing a trail of heart & lung pieces for 30yds where he dropped!
I love the 35 Rem! the shells are cheap ($13 vs $27 for the 300 Win mag) fun to shoot, low(er) recoil, rapid reloading & large magazine capacity. Only thing I have to carry my .357 for now are pigs in the traps, Everything else gets blasted with the 35 Rem!
