A friend on mine has been guiding pigs and deer in the Paso Robles area for about 15 or 20 years. He contacted me a while back and said he had a new ranch to hunt that is only about 20 minutes from my house. We arranged to meet Friday evening and do a hunt.
We pulled onto the ranch and as we were getting the guns out of the cases I spotted a herd of pigs under some trees about 500 yards away. Something spooked them and they disappeared. We saw more pigs among the cattle up the ridge so we drove up near there and slowly walked over a rise. When we crested the rise the pigs we had seen earlier were gone but we could see another bunch feeding around the next knoll. We decided to try to sneak around the knoll from the opposite side to try to ambush them.
As we got around the knoll there was another bunch of hogs feeding below us but they were out of range and going away so we continued around the knoll. As we got around the knoll, we had groups of pigs on all sides of us and we only had to decide what size I wanted and which ones were in range.
We picked out a boar of about 125-150 lbs that was standing broadside 100 yards away. In all we had walked about 1/2 mile and had seen about 40 mature pigs. While we were skinning this one under a tree I could have shot another meat boar that fed within 100 yards of us and one that was well over 200lbs that fed within 60 yards. IMG_5407.jpg
I don't know if it is kosher to post my friend's contact info here but if anyone is interested in a pig hunt PM me.

Blacktailer,
It was great to hunt with you again and I'm glad you took a nice meat boar. That was one of the most fun hunts I've been in on in many years. I think we just had perfect conditions and it was exciting to see all those pigs.

The hunting has still be going well on the new place. This past weekend was our first hunt on the new place without taking a pig. We saw quite a few and although this was my most experienced client (he's been hunting with me, up to once a month for a few years in there, since '93) he missed 4 shots.... I guess it had to happen sooner or later.

Enjoy the meat and let me know how the butcher does.

Thanks,
Kyler
