[attachment=42232:attachment]I thought I'd post a few pictures from last weeks hunt on a guided hunt with Open Hills Outfitters. A couple of nice meat hogs. I shot my dry sow at 33 yards and my brother hit his boar at 22 yards. Outstanding two day hunt....

Here the story.....Last Oct. I decided to do another pig hunt after failing to stick a pig at Hogs Wild in Coalinga. I thought there's got to be a better way of ENJOYING hunting pigs than beating the brush for 2 days in a fenced in area (650 acres of steep terrain). That weekend there where 6 archery hunters and none of us plulled our strings back. Tough hunting and the owner and crew had a dry sense of humor. Oh well enough said...so I went to the DF&G website and looked to see what they had to offer for a listing of guides in Kalifornia. I called about a dozen and picked Dan Davis (Open Hills Outfitters) who hunts 42,000 acres 10 miles west of Willows. He told me its the largest ranch in Glenn County and he was not kidding. To say the least I picked the right guy. Excellent guide and a world of knowledge on all animals in that area. His full time job is a wildlife specialist for the DF&G and he has his guiding service on the side. The ranch is the Elworthy Ranch which is rolling hills to oak trees and ranging from 500-1000 feet. The ranch had a nice bunk house which was fully furnished. It was a two day hunt which started on Friday afternoon and ended on Sunday at noon. Me and my brother decided on the way up to the hunt that we were going to stick a couple of nice meat hogs even though Dan said there were some nice boars on the ranch ranging from 280-350lbs. I didn't waste any time with my pig as I shot her 2 hours into the hunt. The ranch has many creeks running through out the property with willow trees providing shade for the cattle which have the run of the place. We spotted a group of pigs hanging out with some cows under a willow tree and Dan made a plan of how we were going to ambush the group hopefully without letting the cows know what we were up to. Dan(guide) was worried that the cows would give us away. He noticed another willow tree about 150-200 yards down from where they were and wanted me to set up near the tree in case they got spooked from Dan and my brother making there way in. Well....the cows gave them away and the group of pigs used the creek bed as there get away...perfect...the plan was working and the pigs were heading my way. So in the mean time I quickly picked out a good spot to shoot from and range finded a few points to get my yardage down. The first pigs to come around the creek bed corner were three football size piglets, then a small boar, then a small sow and finally a sow around 130-140 lbs. I said thats the one..

and ranged her at 33 yards. I drew back and let her fly and hit the sweet spot. She rans about 30 yards and dropped. One pig down and one to go. Well you see where I hit her...lucky shot. My brother shot his boar Saturday morning around 7:30 in a field feeding. He made his stock using the wind and a creek bed which was lower than ground level. He made his way to the boar and waited for him to come into range. At 22 yards he was done and the hunt was complete with 2 hogs down. What a rush......I still get pumped thinking about it. We spent the rest of the Saturday hunting coyotes (6) and shooting ground squirrels (too many to count). We also drove around the rest of the property in the Polaris Quad and kicked up 3 nice boars with some nice cutters as Dan would say showing me and my brother his thumbs outward and holding them up to his mouth micking a big hog. Next year Dan next year....we are going back and we can't wait.
