Can anyone suggest a good place or guide to hunt on a student's budget? I don't want to do the Los Padres thing and I don't want to drive around and shoot a pig. I want to earn my kill. I basically need access to land that holds hogs. Any suggestions? I'm in the LA area, so driving 3-4hrs north isn't a problem and I can butcher my own.

Thanks!
Sam

Earn your kill means spending time scouting and burning boot rubber. You either spend lots of time in the woods to get a pig or you spend lots of money and have someone point you to a pig. Im pretty sure you will find nothing less then $400.

That being said the DFG has a whole list of guides. But beware theyre not all as great as their websites make them out to be. Just do a search before you commit to one or the other.

Exactly! That's what I want to do, but I'd like to have access to lands that actually hold pigs. I know LPNF does, but that area is so vast and I only have maybe 2-3days. I'd basically like to pay for (productive) land access.

Go hunt Cedar Canyon. It is 2 hours away from LA and it is only $25/day if you don't kill anything. Not sure how it is working now, but when I went there, Bill let you do the hunt however you wanted. We did it as a DIY and basically just paid a trespassing fee. They just dragged your pig out for you when you called them. Only time I have ever paid for a hunt but it was well worth it and I would do it again.

Best way to become educated and have a better than poor chance at scoring is to go guided. Yeah it costs some money but you come away in the black not the red.
As to wild pig public land hunting do a little searching up at the top of the page where jesse has provided a bunch of good info links. And do some viewing of previous posts where this has been discussed every year. Read between the lines for tips and hints...

Your best best is a combination of a land fee and earning your pig: Tejon Ranch. They have a tresspass fee of about $400.00 for a 2 1/2 day Pig Management Hunt - and from L.A. you'll only have to drive an hour and a half up the I-5. Go to wwwhunttejon.com Tejon is about 270,000 acres of beautiful country and there are tons of hogs. Good luck.

Look up "running wild guide service". All fair chase hunting. No imported pigs or fences. Just clean spot and stalk hunt. Tj is a cool guy to. Loves to share his knowledge of pig hunting.

1.Tejon Ranch, I have heard nothing but good things. Good quality animals coming out of there. I would love to hunt there but it is a drive for me in SJ.
2. Cedar Canyon Ranch, Being in SoCal I would jump all over the $25/a day to hunt and $400 kill fee. For TRUE RUSSIAN BOAR!!!!!!!! Only until Xmas!!!!!!!!

Ive hunted with Running Wild Guide Service before with TJ Birman. He is located in Healdsburg CA. So it would be a drive for someone in SoCal. For first time pig hunters he will teach you allot about hunting the creatures. He hunts on two propertys the one in Healdsburg and his neighbors property in Guerneville CA. I hunted the Healdsburg property ALLOT of FRESH sign but no pigs found. Also he only had access to about 1400 acres and we covered all of it. Nice guy though for sure.

I 2nd Tejon Ranch. Your really close to Tejon and it's no "Gimmie" hunt. You have to work for them pigs, but the ranch holds a ton of hogs. Look up the ranch and jump on one of the management hunts. Also, JHO is hosting a annual hunt at JHO. I think its in May this year. I was able to make it a few years back on the JHO hunt and it was a blast. Lots of good people to hang out with and I think we went 20 hogs for 31 guys that year. G'Luck!

On a budget, land with hogs. Sounds like you should try Fort Hunter Liggett or Camp Roberts.
