Well did anyone get a hog yet? I'm in the military and I have not hunted VAFB yet. A friend of mine works there, and said a few months ago the hogs were in the Generals yard, and he called the MP'S to his house to shoot them. They got over 8 hogs in 20 min. , NO LIE , I talked to one of the MP's and the head of housing.
You got to love those wild hog yard rooting terrorist
I've hunted the Bixsby Ranch which is immediately adjacent to Vandenburg. I can confirm there are a hell of a lot of pigs out there. My buddy and I killed two each one weekend.
there are a ton of pigs on vandenburg. i just got back from there this afternoon with my sixth pig from the area. i have been there four times now and have always seen several pigs and at least shot one. there are really only two zones that i really like though.
Gees, I need to make it over there and bring the slug gun. It sounds to good. I would have gone over there over winter break, but I forgot my I.D. in my inspection uniform. I was kicking myself for 3 weeks straight, because I don't want to drive 425 miles one way to go back to school. I will be there shortly though, when I can get time off of work.
Is Bixby Ranch available to the public or is it a private hunt only?
I am looking to go on my first hog hunt and would like to go in a public area if possible. Have know strong ideas as to where to go for reasonalbe success other than central valley and central coast area of CA.
Bixby Ranch is a guided hunt operation. A friend of mine set up the hunt a couple of years ago and I went too. The odds of success are very, very good. I took two pigs. The first was when one of the guide's dogs was let out top take a leak and ended up on a trail. The guide then let the whole bunch go and we were off on foot. Over hill and dale for a couple of miles before the pack split in two on two separate hogs. They both were "treed" at about the same time about a half mile apart. The first one we got to was a big (approx 250) all black, russian-looking boar with nearly three inch tusks. My buddy took that one with a pistol shot. The second one was an eighty-five pound female meat pig which I took.
The following day we each took hogs by spotting and stalking. Mine was a 150 lb female taken with a 30-06 from 175 yards.
I forget how much it cost for the hunt, but it included lodging in an old adobe cabin and good meals. I think with tip and all I spent about 500 for the weekend. There are cheaper deals out there but the whole package was taken care of and it was a lot closer than driving to Paso Robles.
