Is it legal in California to hunt pigs at night? I was talking to a friend of mine and he's planning a full moon hunt. I always thought it was illegal to hunt at night for any game in California. I hope this isn't a lame question, if it is forgive me.

It can't get more illegal than that. No game hunting at night. You must make sure you have read all the DFG regulations before you start hunting, or esle one day you or your friend will be in great trouble. Get the DFG booklet and read up, you can get it at all most every sporting goods store, or visit the DFG website.

Be careful out there, not know the law is not an excuse to break it.

From the regs:

"352. Shooting Hours on Big Game.
Hunting and shooting hours for big game,
including but not limited to deer, antelope, elk,
bear, and wild pig shall be from one-half hour
before sunrise to one-half hour after sunset."

http://www.dfg.ca.gov/fg_comm/2002/02mammal.pdf

Maybe its changed, but I doubt it.

Happy Hunting!

As far as I know it's illegal with one exception, if you are a landowner and can get a depradation permit, that is if the hogs are destroying crops or other property. Then the DFG rules go out the window...you can bait, trap, shoot at night, etc.

shooter44 is right, far as I know. You will see pictures and stories right on this forum of hogs taken in California at night -- but they were taken under depredation permits, like the guy who shoots them at night on the golf course. But for the rest of us, it's legal shooting time only.

Well this is on private land (ranch). So maybe he is right. I still feel likes its cheating though. Wouldn't be any fun for me.

The reason it's legal in Texas is that they're serious about getting rid of the critters. On the other hand, California is thinking up ways to make a profit from them.

Exactly, Kick, exactly! Hogs are managed not as a game species in Texas, but as private property; do with them as you will in any manner that strikes your fancy...traps, dogs, bait, snares, helicopter, spotlight, etc.

But you know what? According to Texas A&M, the Texas hog population STILL continues to increase!

All the previous posts are right on. Hunting hogs at night in California is limited to depredation permits from Fish & Game. The golf course where we go gets hammered at night by the hogs. They do several thousands of dollars of damage when they show up. It's all on the up and up. The course has a permit and we are required to let the local warden know whenever we are going to be there. It is kind of fun the first couple times you go, but it gets old real fast. I can only handle goin a couple times a year with my buddy. He's the primary on the permit. You don't get to keep the hogs either, they require you to take 'em to a tallow company. That's another reason I cant really get into it. I don't like to kill 'em if I can't eat 'em.

Try running them at night with dogs. It adds to the excitement considerably.
