CDFW to Offer Wild Pig Hunting Clinic in Monterey County March 7, 2014 by ahughan

The California Department of Fish and Wildlife's (CDFW) Advanced Hunter Education Program and the Pacific Coast Hunter Education Association will jointly offer a wild pig hunting clinic on Saturday, April 12. The clinic will be held in Lockwood in Monterey County.

Designed for all skill levels, the clinic will cover wild pig biology, methods for locating wild pigs, laws and regulations for pig hunting, hunting and field dressing techniques and the care of wild game.

The clinic will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The cost is $45 for adults. Youths 16 years and younger are free but must be accompanied by a registered parent or guardian. CDFW's Advanced Hunter Education Program will provide all necessary class equipment.

An optional $10 barbecue lunch (country ribs, salad, beans and a drink) will be available for purchase from the Pacific Coast Hunter Education Association the day of the clinic.

Space is limited and preregistration is required. Registration forms can be found online at www.dfg.ca.gov/huntered/advanced/index.aspx. After registering, participants will receive an email with a map to the facility and a list of items to bring.

why don't they have any down here around kern. There are lots of country boys and girls here. Spread the love a little. No need to have the class in the same area over and over. :smiley_green_with_e

Agreed KT. Good 'ole fashioned budget cuts would be my guess. They used to have some in Sonoma County not so long ago, but I don't see any there this year.

CADFW Pig Clinic

Hello Everyone,

I am somewhat new to hog hunting. I attended the clinic in Sonoma back in 2012 and I can tell you it is well worth the effort to attend. Not only did they have DFW biologists speak all about pig biology, sociology, etc., but the head of DFW's pig management program also attended.

We got topractice skinning several pigs that they shot that morning over on Mt. Diablo. Believe it or not, this skinning experience made skinning my first deer in late September 2013 a breeze.

The lunch was BBQ pork and it was store bought but awesome! I was also able to purchase several wild pig program Tee-shirts.

If you are new to pig hunting, or if you just want to learn a little more about our quarry, then I hgihly recommend taking a trip to one of these clinics. Lt. Dan is a great guy, and you will also meet several of the area wardens at the event.

Although I still haven't killed my first pig on public land, when I do I will be using the skills I learned at the wild pig clinic.

Give it a try!

To bad I will be in Texas helping them with their pig problem. I am glad to see the fish and "GAME" provide some info to hunters. This state could be great if some of the rules were changed to promote hunting. I know a lot of the wardens agree.

have fun out it gods country. If you make it to hays county. Make sure to kill all you can and save the tails to get your pay back. I cant recall what they pay right now but you will get something. Used to be $2 bucks but it maybe $4 or $5 this year. Such fun to get all the hogs you want and than get paid back for your bullets. have fun out there and as always be safe.

If you look at Dan's web page, these courses are held all over the State at different times.

thank you. I looked at that. we have only upland game class in kern. I would like to see the pig class around kern also. Not have 2 classes both in Monterey. Like I said before, lets spread the hog loves around a little.

That's probably the only thing worth shooting in Kern.

The best place I know of for pig hunting is FHL.

So take the Saturday class in Lockwood, then go hunting on the fort on Sunday.

What good is a class in Kern going to do?

There are also lots of YouTube videos on hunting.

Lt Dan wants to engender (condition/brainwash) young hunters to be ethical and respectful of the game laws.

The rest of us have already made up our minds about lions. :D

its always interesting to read what people have to say on here. Last time I looked up the numbers from the DFG. Kern was the number one top county for hogs.

The counties with the highest reported take were Kern (591, 16.5%), Monterey (505, 14.1%), Tehama (348, 9.7%) and Mendocino (303, 8.5%). This is consistent with reports from the past several years, though in the 2009-2010 season Monterey County accounted for a slightly greater percentage (672, 17.5%), while Mendocino County had fewer pigs reported (283, 7.4%).

so that's odd to hear you say that we have nothing worth hunting in kern. Either you have no idea what you are talking about or just talking trash to me for fun. LOL but its ok like I said. I like to read stuff around here. Even if its not right. And the good of a class here would be to teach more guys and gals about hog hunting. Same good it will do up north. Thank you for the reply.

Well that sounds like a convincing argument then. I stand corrected.

Maybe Lt Dan will hear you.

We used to offer one at the Tajon Ranch. Attendance got to the point that we had to stop. If Lt. Dan gets enough interest we might be able to have one further south in the future.
Just my two cents.

You could count me and several others in. The only reason I didn't go to the one in Monterey was because it was to far north.

I think Im in. I have bagged a pig already. No problem processing the animal. Pigs are hairy, stinky, tricky mother flippers to hunt. I love it. The more I learn the better. :) Thanks for the info.

I'll be at the April 12 one. Been waiting for it so I can actually go out with the confidence to actually process a hog correctly and not waste anything.
