I ahve a Couple questions for the pig hunters
1)can Civillians hunt FHL?
2)Would anyone be willing to show
myself and a friend the ropes of hunting pigs.

I did hunt them in Texas a few months ago....but there wasn't much to it, i.e. the rancher said sit here they will be out in an hour....

Then shoot all of them you like, and at least 2 more.

Welcome to JHO. Do you have any pictures of the pigs you shot in Texas? What part of Texas did you hunt them at, and was it guided or did you have to pay for it? I hunt in Texas once in a while for pigs. Few years back I shot 2 pigs but paid 100 dollars for the daily lease. There are alot of people and alot of info on this website about FHL. If you do a keyword search on top you will get alot of hits.
Yes, civilians can hunt at FHL, matter of fact I think there are more civilian hunters than military. It is 70 dollars a year and open most weekends. There is more info, if you check out "Hunting info and Columns" on top. Best place in FHL is area 29, but it is walk in only and shotgun or archery/muzzleloader only, but has alot of pigs.
good luck

Thanks for the help! No I havn't got any pictures from my Texas venture. I only managed one pig A very younge sow at that. 1 shot to the head less than 30 yards with a with a 7mag. We hunted in junction Texas on a huge ranch.

My freinds father used to buy a deer lease there. We asked him if we could buy a one day pig hunt, but he would't let us because we were Marines. Just wanted us to have a good time.

Welcome to JHO WYBOY,

I'll be heading up there in late Nov for a pig/turkey/quail hunt. I'll let you know what days. Maybe over Thanksgiving weekend

More info on FHL here at

http://www.jesseshunting.com/site/fhl.html

FHL is a tough pig hunt. VAFB is a better bet from what I hear. I can't get into VAFB since I only did 8 years in USAF

Hey guys:
You guys should try to hunt in Vandanberg Air Force Base (VAFB), active/reserved personnel can hunt there. There are alot of info here on VAFB. Do a keyword search on top and you will get hits. Go to 2A area of VAFB, I have seen pigs there and shot one.
Are you at Camp Pandelton?

I hear you, 6 w/USAF and I'm currently a federal agent, but they won't let me hunt VAFB either.

2A is shotgun only. Were you down by the waterhole near the antennas? I picked up about 30 ticks there pounding through that brush. I could see though that the pigs would show up there.

Thanks for the help guys, I am wanting to bring a non military friend with me on the hunt. Since Vandenburg doesn't allow civillians, or pistol hunters I don't think we will be going there.
Yes I am stationed on Camp Pendleton.

Since you will be hunting with a pistol, the best spots at FHL will not be available to you, but they have plenty of areas to hunt. FYI, they have a six inch or longer requirement on handguns.

Have fun.

Wyoboy,
As has been stated already, FHL is not always as sure thing. It is very big and the pigs are always on the move, and the best spots are sometimes closed to hunting. I would suggest you try a guided hunt to learn the ropes out here and assure a successful hunt. The good news is: The Coast south of the Bay Area is loaded with pigs, the bad news: almost all huntable ones are on private ranches. And those ranches are usually leased by guides.
Do a search on this site and you will find a wealth of info compiled by Jesse.
Good luck...

WYOBOY,

I've hunted quail at FHL for years and know some areas of the property pretty well. Shoot me an e-mail when you're getting ready to head down there and maybe I can join you.

Jesse-have you firmed up any dates for hitting FHL? I'll be heading down there for quail...

Sorry for late reply.
PBRDOG,
I went to the gate on area 2A, where the road stops and there is a gate. Parked right there and walked to the right side. I am trying to remember the antenna but can't recall it. On the left side of the gate, passed the railroad tracks there is a cement water tank. I went the opposite direction and about 300 meters down, there are small wooded areas. I shot the pig inside the wooded area.
It seems to me that because there isn't much pressure there, the pigs like to move around 8-9AM instead of the traditional early morning moves for water.
I went inside the wooded thick area and heard some movements and went around it and saw the pig running through the mud. The pigs get comfortable inside the thicket and they don't want to move out of them.
My advice is throw some rocks when you pass those small thickets and see if there is movement and if there is see if you can pinpoint.
I am going to be there in June on leave, I am trying to go there for one day.
Hopefully I will have the same luck as last time; get there at 8AM, get the permit and check in at 930AM with a pig.
Best of luck and please share photos if you get one.
