Pig hunting in Oahu

I will be in Oahu 1/3 - 1/9 for a wedding and will be bringing the gear to hunt at least one day while I'm there. I hunted there once before a couple years ago without any luck, so I know the general regs and such. I hunted the Big Island last year also. I did some searching here and didn't find anything positive. I know there are several guys on here who hunt the islands, anybody have any tips if you're stuck on Oahu for a week? Or should I forget the pigs and go after upland birds? It looks like I'm limited to the Honolulu Watershed Forest Reserve (archery only), Ewa Forest Reserve & the Kaipapau/Hauula Forest Reserve.

Try Asking some of the locals about Mililani valley,behind schofield barracks, Kolekole pass which is some really hard hunting, thick stuff and really steep. I don't recommend it to the inexperience.

Thanks for the tip Pat - I still haven't found anything too promissing. Between that and the cost of the out of state license and the trouble of taking my bow or gun I might just suck it up and surf and party with the fam!

Oahu has been having a real problem with hogs in the Manoa Valley area. They opened a special season because of the damage. Problem is you are talking about a really thick jungle. We are also having a really wet winter. I suspect really miserable hunting conditions. As far as I know, the guys hunting those areas hunt over dogs. I hunt primarily on Maui. The area I hunt does not open until February.

Check out Kahana Valley, kinda thick but they're in there. Also, if you can hook up with some locals, there a bunch of good places. Poamaho(behind dole plantation), sacred falls, three puka(behind Haleiwa). Eastside has choke places to hunt if you can get access. Gunstock Ranch and Kualoa Ranch are very good places. Try calling.

Also, bring either archery or open sight rifle. Shots are going to be close in the thick stuff. When I lived over there I had acces to Kualoa Ranch and I used to slay it there every other week.

Thanks for the info, I left messages with both ranches, it would be great to get on one of them. The Sacred Falls area looks like the place I plan to hunt since it is close to where I'll be staying and open to hunting this month.

I was at Kualoa Ranch last July and one of the tour guides has hunting rights. He hunts it 3 or 4 times per week. I dont have his name but i almost got out with him. He had killed 3 hogs that week. Showed me the pics in his phone. He drives the 8 wheel drive vehicles. We saw hogs on tour. Hogs are on west side of ranch mostly.

I used to hunt Kualoa from 2000-2003 about once every two weeks. I was only allowed to hunt the east side, from the paint ball course and up towards the gift shop. I took lots of pig from there with my bow. I went and fished the ponds on the west side of the ranch a few times and saw a lot of pigs over there too. I heard they are doing a lot more pig hunting on the ranch now, so I don't know what the pig population on the ranch is now, but back in the early 2000's it was great.

The tour guide said he hunts after Ranch is closed of course. The pigs are used to hearing mangos fall on ground. So the guide would throw up a boulder to create a thud. The pigs would come to the sound of the thud looking for mangos and he would shoot them. He got 3 the day before i got there. They were in forest areas on left side more jungle where the 8 wheel drive tours take you. Not the movie set area. The guide lives right in area. He told me about the fishing in ponds also.

Careful hiking above the falls. Back in the late 70's my brothers got shot at by pot growers behind the falls. Don't know if it's still going on.

I know Bjake's trip is over, but it is worth bringing along some gear to hunt Oahu if you are on vacation. The public areas on the windward and Waianae coasts have decent amounts of pigs, and during the week there is less traffic on the hiking trails, etc. Perfect for an evening hunt! I took a friend out yesterday, but just as we got into a piggy area, the bugs started biting my buddy up, so we had to head out. Shooooots!!! Plenty of signs though.
