MY SELF AND SOME FELLOW MARINES ARE PLANNING TO GO HUNTING AT THE AFB IN VANDENBERG. I JUST NEED TO KNOW WHAT SIZE ROUND OR SHELL IS RECCOMENDED. ARE SHOTGUNS O.K. OR A 7.62 ROUND WITH A MOUSER?

If you plan on pissing the pig off use shot, if you want to kill it use a slug.

Do you need a rifled barrel for slugs or do you just use the smoth bore?

I have a rifled barrel for my 870 wich i shoot sabot slugs with and its pretty accurate. You can shoot slugs from a smooth bore barrel also. The sabot slugs are encased in a plastic shell that breaks away when it is fired allowing the bullet to spin. Regular slugs are loaded in a wad like shot would be so the accuracy is not there, but a perfect shot is not always needed because they do a lot of damage.

If you're in the thick brush and you shoot regular rifled slugs out of a smooth bore, in most cases that's the ideal set-up. At close range slugs kill hogs dead...Right there, end of story, no tracking, carry it home DEAD.

Earlier last year, I was talking to a guy up there that said it took 7 12 ga slugs to finally drop his hog.

beans,

I hope you can get there sooner than that, that's a long time to wait. And it will be more difficult to find 'em, it's plenty hot and dry by that time.

My last trip out with my pal: we had 3 rifles, .30-06, .45-70, .375 Winchester. That gives us a little something for those 300-yard sniper shots, and plenty of brush-busting power.
We have a couple of slug-shooting shotguns but didn't take 'em.

Firepower like that will pretty much keep you covered at VAFB.

Cheers,

Carl

Keep in mind though that some areas are shotgun only. There's alot of pigs coming out of area 2A, which is SG only. Just something to think about.

I am soory for that last quote I meant to say that we are going on the third week of February. I think we will also check out that area 2A it seems to be mentioned a lot in the post. I plan to take my shotguns but hopefully I'll have the 30-06 by then.
