Make sure you call the DAY BEFORE YOU GO!!! My buddies and I got shut down last weekend for quail. As of Wednesday we checked the info line and were told all areas were open. Well guess what, we drove 250 miles to find out that only two were open and that they were full. They reserve the right (and apparently enjoy exercising said right) to close areas on a moments notice, no ifs ands or buts. It was a very long, quiet drive back to LA.
Why go all the way back to LA? You passed some awesome quail territory on the road home, including areas around Coalinga on the I-5 route, or a ton of places in Los Padres on the coastal route.
coachdog Last weekend on the recording the only areas listed were 25 and 29. If someone told you there were other areas open they were wrong. The week before the whole base was closed.
The areas that are open to hunting and fishing vary from week to week.
Make sure you have all the necessary paperwork before you go and check the recorded information line. Fubar
We tried to do some looking around some other areas we knew had birds, but there were so many other hunters in the area who had been turned away at FHL that all the birds had been pretty thoroughly stomped. The backroads were full of guys driving around real slowly with sullen looks on their faces. With that and the fact that a storm was blowing in, we just said "uncle" and whimpered back home.
I'd love to pick your brains on some sleeper spots up in that area. We probably drove past hundreds of coveys and had no idea they were there.
You're right Fubar, I should have personally made the call to find out. I took my buddy's word that he had called, now I'm wondering how wise that was.
FHL trip no pigs in the basket this time but they are there lot's of sing you can almost smell them in some places I will be going back in a few weeks .
