You have a picture of what these vests look like? Where do you get them?[/b]

Here is a picture from the website of the brand I use. There are several different companies that make cut vest and collars. Most, if not all, of the companies are found in Texas and the South.

Becuse they are considered big game you can't kill them with knifes.....Then how can you run them with dogs?
Pigs in Texas are considered feral stock. If you are the land owner or an agent of the land owner you can kill them without a hunting permit as long as you can say that sometime in the past they did damage to the property(like rooted something up) They're such a problem here that folks are trying to make it so anyone can shoot one without a permit. I like to see that so out-of-state hunters can hunt without paying a arm and leg.We can shoot them day or night.with what ever we want to shoot. Knives and spears are alright too. If you use a flashlight or Q-beam then you have to call the Game Warden first as it's illegal to use one at night for hunting were deer are known to roam(the entire state). But if the warden knows a head of time they will let you do it.....just don't make them get out of bed and find you.......

At least for the time being in CA, it's still legal to use dogs to pursue certain big game, including bears, deer, and hogs. Can't use them for elk or sheep, though.

I think it was last year (or year before last) that a bill was bouncing around to outlaw the use of dogs for running game, but it was defeated. Not sure how closely, but it sure did draw attention to the fact that hunters need to hang together, regardless of how they like to hunt.

Do they hunt deer with hounds in Texas?

Speck-
I thought you could not use Dogs on Deer here in CA either?

I thought there were only several states that allow it and We were not one of them?

Raidernation,

There are closed areas in CA, but a large part of the state allows one dog per hunter for deer. Check the regs, as the maps and boundaries seem to change a little now and again.

It was indeed last year when AB342 (Koretz, D-W. Hollywood) authored a bill that originally would have prohibited the use of dogs to pursue all mammals within California. Once he realized that he had generated a substantial amount of opposition, he amended it to restrict the use of dogs for the taking of bear and bobcat only. It was defeated 4-10-6 during its first hearing with the Assembly Water, Parks and Wildlife Committee meeting. Without the critical 11th "No", it was granted reconsideration for the following legislative year. However, Koretz opted not to continue his efforts in the 2004 legislature.

The use of dogs for the taking of deer is not necessarily region-specific, but rather, is determined on a hunt-by-hunt basis. Dogs may be used during the General season in zones A, B, C, D and X and most Additional hunts. Dogs may not be used during archery season (regardless of zone) and some Additional hunts such as the Lake Sonoma Junior Either-Sex hunt. The use of dogs is subject to the discretion of the Commanding Officer on any hunt conducted on grounds within the authority of the United States Armed Forces.

Coondog...........An old friend of mine who was born and raised on the Hawaiian Island Kauai told me that his dad and uncles used to hunt pigs "the old Hawaiian way", with dogs and knives. As I recall, he said that the method they used was to let the dogs bay up a pig, then they would catch up to the dogs, get behind the pig (as the hog would be focused mostly on the dogs and their teeth, not the men), the cut the achilles tendons and arteries/veins on the back legs. After a few minutes, the hog would weaken and sit while still facing the dogs. The hunter would then quickly straddle the hog and put a large knife between the 3rd and 4th ribs.

Anyway, that's what I recall of that procedure. Do you do something similar to that or do you do what another member mentioned, stick the knife thru the armpit and into the heart?

My experience with one pistol exception has always been using my trusty .30-06 with hogs. The cartlidge armor over the shoulder area of the larger boars made me think that getting a knife through that would be next to impossible. Maybe that was the deal why they chose the rib shots, but I have no idea.......
