Wow, sounds like a tough hunt, but lots of fun at the same time...
Now hopefully those hogs will be getting fat and lazy in the time leading up to the JHO hog-killing extravaganza.

Post pictures plssssss! And, not only of the hog but also of the worst stuck. Good there are no human casualties -- or injuries.[/b]

Sorry, can't post any pics, just as i pulled out the camera to take some snaps of the pig and snow, the battery died, must have been on since i packed it. I can tell you though, we did get into some hairy roads, had the truck sideways down most of a hill, but the good old e-brake and gas method helped out alot.

THat was us in the blue truck, we were north the whole time, congrats on the bow pig, I should have taken a sow I had a shot at quite a few times, once at less than thirty yards, but since I had been on them for so long and had stayed within such a short distance I got cocky, and no pig.

the best stalking chance I had was when dad busted his pig, they were within thirty yards of a drop off I could have sneaked in easy, but didn't, again wish in one hand.

the only camera we had was dad's camera phone, and I will get those pics as soon he send them to me, he just landed in Georgia.

Yeah the good chains and fourwheel with limited slip worked like a charm, we never really even got sideways.

it took me about half an hour of constant pressure washing and twenty five bucks in quarters but I got old blue halfway clean.

Too Bad I didn't get to stop and talk to you, would have been nice to meet another JHO'er out in the field. Either way, I know it was a lot of fun and can't wait until next year.

Bearclaw, you ever want a partner to head up to FHL? If so, let me know, sure would like someone else to bow hunt with.

Take care,

Here is my buddy doug's pig, he got this one at about 100 yards at the bottom of a really steep canyon. Luckily it was little, so it wasn't to hard to pack out. He shot it at 4 o'clock, and we made it back to the truck just before dark on saturday.

Look at that snow! Man, that's fun. I wouldn't have wanted to be driving the tactical vehicle in all that stuff, but it sure does look like a blast to hunt in.

Hey, Hoghunter714, your buddy still have that Suzuki Samurai?

What an adventure! Hog hunting and off roading all in one package? Too bad btrebil the battery in your camera quit on you.

Speck - What's your interest in a Samurai? I had one before with 1.1 liter puny little engine but it left the Land Cruisers and Tacoma's stuck in the muddy river when we all crossed it in a convoy. As I myself was preasantly surprised, it dawned on me that it was the power to body-weight ratio that did it. And concluded that powerful engine and high torque is not absolute.

Not sure what Speckmisser has in mind but I have been kind of looking for one for up on the property. One of those would be cool for getting back and forth up there. It would be faster than driving our big trucks.

Fine, rub it in.

I should've jumped on that thing last year when you told me about it, but things were just a little too tight.

Beastslayer, I've been looking for a good off-road vehicle that would be a good tow-behind for my big Dodge. A lot of places I hunt don't allow 4-wheelers. The Suzuki has a pretty loyal following among off-roaders, for the reasons you describe. From all I've read and heard, it's exactly what I need.

They're out there for a reasonable price... but it always seems like I've got something else to spend my money on.

Them little Sidekicks are great, you just have to watch out for the role over. We kept one down at our mexico house, and i rolled it about 3 times over the past 5 years in the sand. Just saying watch your speed when you take those turns in soft stuff. Other than that, it was great.

I have a 2002 geo tracker/sidekick with the 2.0 motor and it has plenty of power on and off road, I just drove it to new york and back last week from San Diego . We went around long lines of cars going 10 mph near Flagstaff in a snowstorm and didn't even have to use 4 whl dr. I've had 3 samuris and no matter what I did to them they were to underpowered on the highway, the sidekick will cruise all day at 75 mph without a problem and get about 19 mpg. I often drive around stuck off road vechicles because it is so light.

I am always up for hog hunting, though I haven't even looked at where FHL is.

I hear Paso Robles has some hogs, I would lke to find some within about the same distance as Tejon from me, less than two hours from Santa Barbara.

I hope to have some of the pics we took from dad's camera phone today.

Hey Bearclaw, FHL is just north of Paso by about 15-20 miles. It is supposed to be pretty good pig hunting and they have sections that are bow/shotgun only. Shoot me an IM if you'ld be interested in hitting it up some time.

bearclaw - Way cool (and cold). Extend my congratulations to your Dad and the nice pose for the pig-lol. A Tim Taylor grunt to on the truck with all four wheels on tire chains. That's the kind of set up for a real man gear.

btrebil - You are right on the roll-overs. Mine though did not roll over. It's just did a 3 360's on me which brought me staring death in the face with its front wheels nearly off a bridge. My fault actually. I so enjoyed the nifty little toy that instead of a full turn I would flick the steering wheel for the rear to move sideways for the turn. I learned my lessons well since that day.

dirtpoort - How much that Sidekick cost new nowadays? In Australia, its so inexpensive that they'll buy one new, slap a bull bar and would actually substitute it for horse to drive cattles.

You're doing 19mpg! That's my average for my new V6 4WD 4Runner. Are you sure your 4WD is not engaged throughout? New York to San Diego!!! I only used mine for short hops. Although I have had no trouble for the 4 years I've used mine, I may just not too trusting to take it on a long drive.

speck - Same thought here on going around regulations for places not permitting those 4wheelers.

Look at those pictures!!! Hunting in the snow sounds fun but it isn't the best conditions believe me. being a long time duck hunter I started hunting big game to get away from the wet and freezing ass cold weather.
I'm sorta glad I got bumped from that hunt now that I look at those pictures but I'm sure everyone had a great time none the less. This thread made me add an extra camera and a video camera to the camping list because I know all the JHO guys who didn't get to go will be disappointed if we don't have some good pictures of the hunt.

I will carve out some room on my website for a few video shots of the hunt for sure.

Congrats on the hogs and it's great everyone made it home safe.
