There were about 16 guys set up around our camp at the Feb. hunt. By 1pm on Sunday, only one guy had yet to tag out. I sent him back out there. Don't know if he filled his tag Sunday afternoon or not. I took two rookie hunters, and they both shot their first-ever big game.
That's better than 90%. I'd imagine your numbers are probably more accurate on an annual basis. I'm just lucky.
I've only hunted the South Ranch. Would love to venture out. However, I usually take a rookie friends, and want to maximize their opportunities. So, I've been hunting the area that I know best.
What I would like to know, is, where are the tuskers. Which side produces the most boars? I have yet to see a decent-sized boar. I'm ready for a wall hanger. I'd imagine that a boar is like a cagey old buck - smarter, more noc-turnal and goes solo.
Also, I'd like to know which ranch is better for bowhunting. I planned on hunting with my bow on the Feb. hunt. However, the wind was blowing 50+ mph. So, I left the bow in the case.
Tip of the Day: Bring lots of rope and or cable, and a winch if you have one. Lots of the hogs we see are 500 - 1000+ feet straight down, where the truck won't go. Back breakers!
One Track, In talking to some of the guides they said the real tuskers are in Tejon Canyon. It's the place in the north that is off limits to rifle hunters. I've yet to see anything over 2.75" in length (wet, in the jaw). But they know more than me about the ranch.
Do you know if Tejon Canyon is open during the PIG O RAMA for bowhunters?
How big do those tusks need to be for a nice wall hanger? I haven't a clue.
Wish I could make the April hunt. Just need to give my wife some equal time after coming off a five month archery season. Hoping to get the paperwork in the mail so I can sign up for the May hunt.
