Who is going on the Pig O Rama in February. I will be there with a couple of friends. I am starting to wonder about Tejon Ranch. Only two Pig O Rama this year. I wonder why the cut backs. I talked to a person on the phone on the ranch and she could not give me an answer. I know they are doing more guided hunts. My theory is that there is not a large turn out on the Pig O Rama hunts anymore. Just my thoughts. Still a reasonable hunt for the price but not cheep. If you are going I come on by and say high I will be driving a white jeep. Good luck to all who is going.

76 takers at the last pig o rama. more semi guided hunts for 600 a person( need 8-10 guys) which includes lodging and meals. even better deal than a pig o rama i my book. i like less closed weekends for members. Oh yah february from what i understand is the last pig o rama at tejon ranch ever .

Lots of stuff going on "behind the scenes" at Tejon, most of it caused by the time that lapsed during hunting stoppage after the mountain lion debacle. The ranch discovered a few new problems as a result of lowered or zero-kill numbers. They're dealing with it.

Care to elaborate?

That kinda explains something about 76 hunters and only 26 kills. One can only guess the number of members and some members went all season without a pig kill.

I have talked to jodi and you are right there is a lot of things going on Tejon Ranch. A friend of mine said that the ranch is trying to take 1,600 hogs a year off the ranch. It seems like they are trying to eliminate the hogs. Soon they will be starting the new housing track on the south side up to Bear Trap. Soon you will probably see no hunting on the south side at all. Its all about money. I am glad I went all those times when the Pig O Rama first started, sure had some good times. I read some post and the hog numbers seem to be down. I know there are a lot of other hunts going on the ranch. The hogs have gotten smarter. I am no expert but I have taken a hog every year, except for one year and that was because of a bad shot placement. They are there you just need to be up at day light and hunt all day until dark. They seem not to come out of the brush to often. Either would I if I was getting shot at. They are there, I have seen over 50 hogs in two days of hunting. Just my 2 cents worth.

Thanks for the update Hog Slayer. It sounds like they will need to do some eradication kills to take out 1600 hogs a year. What a shame. How's the drought impacting the hunt?

I'm noticing fewer pigs on some of the ranches I hunt. I think the drought has a lot to do with it. Most of the smaller streams and springs have dried up. Tejon has developed a lot of stock troughs and stock ponds. These watering sources are easing the impact of the drought but the hog population will still be stressed by having to travel farther for water than normal.

Hogs need about 3 liters of water per hundred pounds of body weight per day. They get some of this from the food they eat but the majority must come from some other water source. Some of those deep, dark canyons covered by a heavy tree canopy on Tejon used to hold small seeps and springs for the pigs but they're dry now (although this hasn't lowered the tick population in those areas....I hate ticks).

I used to hunt late morning to early evening, 10am-4pm. I've changed to dawn and dusk for hard hunting with the middle of the day saved for glassing watering holes. This has helped but I'm not seeing large sounders (100-150) like I used to. Most groups are small in number (20-25) with fewer young ones in the mix. Not good.

Yup, but the pigs don't usually stay near the troughs. They like to be away from the "commotion". I've found more sign as well as hogs if I get into some of the deeper canyons. That said, dawn and dusk are the best times to catch'em coming from or going into from those canyons for water. Much easier to kill'em at the top of the canyon, near a trough and a road, rather than at the bottom of some steep, nasty canyon. Tejon still has some working troughs and seeps in some canyons, but nothing like it was just five/six years ago (the last year I worked on the ranch).

from what I have seen or been told. There is still lots of hogs around but just not in the same spots as always. I am sure the reason we have seen more of them in BVS this year is due to the hunts at Tejon. Pigs are very smart and know when its time to move on. Im still working on a ok to hunt some land near by. So maybe one day soon I will have my Tejon hog even with out going to that ranch.

#1Predator... my invite still stands if and when I get the ok. I am trying to get something going for the Lt. Col on his birthday. He will be 70 this year. I think a family hunt will be a real cool gift if I can line it up.
