I guess I'm up to about 6 cents on this thread....

as good luck goes, I was on the range today with my new .30-06 Howa on which is mounted a Leupold Vari-X II 3-9x40. I won't scare anyone with my horror stories of trying to get this stupid thing sighted in..... unless you want to hear about it.

anyway, TODAY would seem to finally be the Day Of Success !! I'm still floating......

at 100 benchrested yards the Howa/Leupold setup was making 1" groups using my "el cheapo" 180-grain "get it close to sight-in" ammo. So I let the rifle cool off for an hour or so.
Then with a nice ambient temp rifle the first 5 shots made a 1" group.
Now the barrel was good and toasty hot so I switched over to my genuine pig hunting ammo using 180-grain Barnes Triple-Shock X-Bullets and a 5-shot group went up to 1-1/2".
The barrel temperature by this time was just below the flash point of tungsten so I switched to my other pig hunting ammo: Lapua, using the 180-grain Naturalis bullet. I didn't get so much "pattern" as I got "spread." The shots were all inside a 3" diameter circle but nicely spread out.
15 relatively quick shots, great accuracy, and I give all that credit to the Leupold..... and the Howa's no accuracy slouch either.

All in all, I put about 70 rounds downrange and so far the Leupold has taken the abuse.
I'm going out again next week and check things again, and take some 220-grain ammo to see how I like it.

And the week after the Howa and the Leupold and I will be pig hunting at VAFB !!!

Cheers,

Carl

Hey all,
Ok fellas , after all the helpful suggestions and advice I took the plunge. The least expensive Leupold VX-II (3-9x40, matte) was at Bass Pro, rangeroptics, hunting4bestbuy and a few others for $279.00 - most retail and on-line companies sell it for $299.00. Then I took some of the advice here and scored the same thing in the manufacturers box, with warranty, brand spankin' new for $225.00 on ebay......I snapped it up. It's gettin' mounted. Many thanks to all who replied, I really appreciated it. Hope to see some of you at Tejon in March for the POR. Thanks again and safe huntin' to you.
