Was thinking of heading up to upper cottonwood to do some pig hunting, but was wondering if anyone has been up there lately???

Ive hunting in cottonwood a number of times but have only seen pigs on the property a couple of times...wonder why this is?

Do the pigs just travel through cottonwood between ranches?

Do you guys think that pigs actually stay in cottonwood?

Anyone been up there lately and see pigs?

Upper Cottonwood is such as small place that I think all pigs there are just transient. Seeing a pig, much less harvesting one, is just a matter of luck. If I recall, the average harvest is just one a year.

There are springs and oaks in that area but then again, the pigs who'll take it as residence will only do so if there are no other water or food sources from the nearby ranches. And those ranches are lightly hunted or never turned as place for target shooting.

Good luck!

I hiked about a mile into the place on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.
I went to the Stock Pond with my lunch to get a little excercise.
I brought my bino's and glassed it all to hell.

Nothing...

No sign at all...

Just some deer bones here and there.

A couple of years ago they trapped/killed all the pigs in Henry Coe and then it seemed like all the ones (ALL the ones? - the measly few) in Upper Cottonwood disappeared.

Let us know if you find any.

I just finished a pig hunt in Red Bluff (just up the road) on a 30,000 acre ranch. The guide said the pigs in that area are transient and move around a lot looking for food. He said this year has been a poor year for acorns (late spring rains) and the hogs are moving around a lot in the search for food. There appeared to be quite a few groups of hogs in the area so I would think some do pass through Cottonwood as well.

Upper Cottonwood is open for Pigs until the Last Sunday in January. If you go make sure to bring comfortable shoes. The only flat service is from the parking area to the gate.

Here is a contact number if you want more info. (209) 826-0463

There has been an ungodly amount of pressure on this place this year. Maybe that is why there are no pigs.

Everyone on the internet talking about there hot spots dosn't help matters any.

I have seen good spots blown out just because somebody has had a sighting.

Just look at how many people view these things.

The worst thing to happen to public land has been the internet.

It just takes one person to post up a sighting or a little luck and the following weekend the place is over run with hunters gleaning info off the web.

I know I've done it and so have we all.

Just look at how many people look at a post and do not respond.

If you want to blow a place out and ruin it for future trips just post it up.

Sounds to me like some folks want to "glean" but get upset if their honey hole is shared.

Upper Cottonwood Creek does have a few hogs, not many. Most of the times I have been there I did not see a pig; and the few I have seen pigs there I chose not to shoot. Anyone willing to pack a pig out of that place has more gumption than me. You cannot take a vehicle of any kind in there, and as someone else said, the only flat spot is the parking lot.

Right CS.

I cannot even haul my sorry arse 2 miles straight up without resting on those darn hills.

And I jog 30 minutes each and every day and considered myself fit.

I'm suprised Family Tradition hasn't chimed in on this one, he knows that place like the back of his hand. Does anyone know what he's up to? He hasn't been on here in a while.

I bet he got trampled to death in the stampede of hunters running around cottonwood these days.

Or maybe they just have too much of the Christmas Spirit! It is public land.

The internet the doom of a hunting spot? This cracks me up every time I see it posted here by someone who claims their spot was ruined by posts. Let's don't forget the DFG has published a book that names Cottonwood as a place to hunt. Bob Robb has a pig book out doing the same. Jim Matthews also has published info on Cottonwood. People who hunt there and live nearby tell their friends, who tell their friends etc. Despite what some want you to think, the Internet is not the ruination of a hunting spot. It's more like some think they own public ground and the rest be damned if they just happen to buy a map or get a tip to check out a new area. What a shame really.

If you don't like your honey hole being talked about that is your perogative. If you post here to try and shut down any discussions about certain areas you're going to have a problem, it's one of my pet peeves. My advice is just click onto another thread if you don't like what you see.
