Have gone up to these areas a couple of times since they reopened. I have seen lots of sign mainly in the form of tracks, but can't find the pigs (except at midnight while driving)

I have ridden my dirt bike all through the area and see pigs pretty often, but since I have been going out with my rifle I have had no luck.

I am new to this and I would love some tips for veteran hunters who have been successful in these areas. how do you locate pigs in the day? were are the best places to find bedding? You know the basis.

Thanks

Welcome to JHO Rg!

The hogs are hard to get onto in that area, since there is a good bit of pressure and a ton of great cover for them to hide in. Best bet is to get back in there and follow some of those trails into the thick stuff. Go slow, watch the wind, and be ready.

If you tag one out of the area, you've done something.

So following the pig trail through the thick brush on the hill side will be the best bet?

It's what I would do... but bear in mind that the only hogs I've ever been able to lay eyes on in that area have also been at night.

I'd follow the trails and see if they didn't bring you to a good location for taking a stand. Problem is, once you get into that stuff, it's sometimes tough to do anything quietly in those thickets. A handgun or shotgun would be a good bet for that kind of work. However, I've found that the thick trails often open up to some nice little areas on the mountainsides...and you never know what you'll find there.

What Speck said,
And be there early as they(like on all public land areas) are mainly nocturnal...

That area is one of the toughest areas I have ever hunted in. There used to be some spanish goats running around there, but I think they are all but ghosts.

The best luck we had on the pigs was to check out the water sources for sign and just stakeout close to the water.

The last time I hunted there was in 1989, so I dont know what if anything has changed since.

Good Luck.
