I have an idea and wanted to know what you think of it. If pigs are truly varmints like rats and coyotes then I think land owners would want to thin them out. Do you think that it would be worth while to place a add in the local news paper. Pigs wanted: Has anyone done this? Will it work? Mark

I'm from LA and one day I drove up to Santa Ynez and to Lompoc where pigs are prevelant and put up little signs at feed stores in both cities. I said something to the effect of "pig problems? I will remove with bow, NO FIREARMS". I never did get any calls but who knows, the right place and the right time, anything is possible. I say do it!!! A lot of times it's just who you know that will get you on to some prime property. Keep talking with people and maybe you'll get a property that no one else hunts. One of the ladies at the feed store gave me a contact name and number to someone who had property, it never did pan out but who knows it might have. A few phone calls is not much work to try and get some good hog spots. Good luck!! and let us know how it goes.

You'll probably have more luck up north in San Jose. It kept on getting report of problem pigs going down and destroying gardens near towns.

But that's Speck's territory.

I have trouble myself saying in broad strokes that pigs are "problems". In Tejon, I saw healthier grass re-growth on previously rooted areas.

Orso - About a year ago, I saw fresh rooting near Santa Ynez river. The place is near Fremont (?) campground and about few miles within resident cottages and farms. Bow is a definite possibility but check the regs.

Had trouble with the camp administrator when I went plinking with my .22 about 500 meters from camp. The do-good fellow does not recognize the blast from a .22 and big-bore rifle or pistol blast coming from another ridge.

Worth a shot I suppose. I did the same thing with no response a few years back. They might be vermin but they bring in money! I did post my little "let me help with your pig problem" on Craigs List which is not known to be the most hunter and gun owner (or bow in this case) friendly web site out there

Ha ha...I replied to that wishing you luck and offered help.:) Craigslist is definitely not the site for hunters/gun owners, but still a great resource otherwise.

That one may not have been me, could have been though. In thinking about it, I posted it prior to joining JHO in 2002 so it was a while back. There is usually a post like that every week or so though. Sometimes I e-mail them, just like you did, wishing them luck and I usually send a link to JHO and tell them it is a good source for info and contacts. Actually that is how our illustrious (or maybe infamous) "Backcountry" came to be a member here.

A lot of people do that here. Non-residents buy land and it gets ripped up by pigs. They are pretty clueless usually so they call the numbers on the signs. Get signs up all over for it. Might have been "Hog Busters"

In my opinion pigs have become an invasive species in many areas.Although many welcome the elusive swine it is still an envasive species. There fun to hunt but there still an invasive species. Some help pay the tax on their land with them but there still an invasive species.Making them a game animal is not proper,It inhibits the owners from keeping levels in check. Some try to do it with hunting, but the only satisfaction comes from the hunter, which is good.I think Ca. needs to de-list the pig from a game animal Esp. on private ground. I think if you want to Help the farmer you go to him and the county trapper and get a depred. permit. Its not hunting but you get more done. After the first couple of catches is when your hunting skills come into play. The farmer will like the safeness of your trap and the easy dispatch of your swine. And as you get to know the farmer, theres always a hog that wont go in the trap, some times you have to slip in and neutralize that one. Also tell the farmer that you wont be using the little 4+4+8 box type trap but a corral type.My best is 12 at one time.Remeber in Ca. you can give the hogs away dead but you cannot recieve any compensation from the trapped hogs.Hope all the hog hunters dont get on me but sometimes this is the way to go.Rember they are an invasive species in most states. If you need any help let me know Upper

Check with vineyards. I know a guy who stopped at a small vineyard on the way back from deer hunting to buy some wine. Apparently, vineyard owners have problems with pigs and deer. At any rate, the vineyard owner let him come on and shoot two of his bucks. I have not been that lucky yet, but there are opportunities out there.
