I've heard about some land public land around Pine Flat lake. Does anyone know where it is and if there are any hogs on it??? I don't need specifics, just how to get to it.
My friends and I have been exploring this for some time. It looks on the BLM lands as if you have to enter by boat up one of the creeks across from Lombardo's marina and hike in. I have been told differently by a couple of other people that it is not locked in by private land, however; I have not found a public road to it.
There are however; several areas on the BLM land maps that show chunks of land around the lake and it may be that the things we have heard refer to other areas. If you get any clarification, I sure would appreciate a PM. Rangers up there are not real helpful.
I will let you know what I find out. If I have to enter by boat, that's not a problem. I think a buddy and I are going up Monday to check it out. Did you ask the rangers in the feild or at the station?
I chatted with one ranger in the field, who was far less than helpful. I was just at the map store today, and noticed that there is some promising looking BLM land near Luckett Mountain, not sure if it accessible from the car.
Let me know how Monday goes. You will want to veer to the left of the creek from where you enter and go side hill. The ranger at the station said there is a fence that clearly marks the boundary.
There are certainly better areas around, but a few pigs stray close to the lake from time to time. I had a lengthy discussion with one of the wardens for the region and he told me that he had signed off on "a" tag there "one" time, so it didn't give me much confidence for the area.
The real hog haven for that region is about 3-4 miles South of the lake in great looking valley which, of course, is all private! Typical pig hunting dilemma.
The ground is mostly national forest service and the best map for the area is the Sierra NF map. The land at the head of the lake and everything North of the lake is not necessarily the best habitat. The prime pig ground runs in strip roughly parallel to the national forest boundary a mile to three miles West in an area that is exclusively private(think Maxson road area). A lot of times you can see the pig sign right from the road, however access is the problem.
This, again, is same old tired pig hunters story!!
The only help I can provide is that someone saw some pigs once at Cat's head Mountain, North of the lake, try climbing to the top and glassing the West side at first light, that's probably your best bet for the public ground.
FYI, during a camping trip to Pine Flat with a group we saw snake poison baits set out, and sure enough one of our guys got a "buzzworm" about 10 minutes after we arrived
. So if you're going there in the hot months, watch your step!
