I went out to the Pine flat area this weekend to hunt for some Bandtails and saw lots of pig droppings and fresh rooting was wondering if anyone here has ever had any success hunting for hogs in there, the public areas. Thinking about giving a try soon. By the way new to this site lots of very great info here. HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

The hogs are there, but they generally only come out to play when it is totally dark. Seems like you found a nice active spot. Get to it before daylight and just before sunset and you might get lucky. I think a few hogs have come out of there, but successfull folks usually stay pretty hush-hush. I have not gotten one out of there yet, but I will soon!! It's a terrific area to spend some time, and you can fish from shore during midday.

I believe CAHunter got one there earlier this year. There are hogs there but tend to be pretty nocturnal. Get to the spot before first light and you might get lucky.

Welcome Beezer. I see that you found a much better and more active site. Anyhow....I've been hunting Pine Flat a lot this year and have not seen one yet. Lots of signs...just no pigs. I'm hoping to get one before I have to buy a new tag by next summer LOL.

beezer,

Cold1 is right, I got one up there earlier this year. Here is a link to that thread: http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/index....=178237&hl=

They are there, but as stated, they are hard to catch out in the open during legal shooting hours. If you found fresh sign I would go back to that spot as soon as you can.

That place will never get hunted out. Waaaay too much impenetrable brush. Pretty easy to find sign with enough leg work. But you really have to be pretty lucky to see one during legal hunting hours -- so the more trips you make, the better your chances to win the lottery there! I've also seen pigs crossing the paved road between Fresno and Pine Flat at night while driving back past private property -- so the pig population is a bit spread out actually. If someone actually posted the gps coordinates of their kill online here, it would still not boost anyone's chances of scoring a pig during daylight -- but it would probably result in all the pigs being pushed out of that one small area and over to the next brushy ridge or two. Seems like all the guys fishing around there know about the pigs -- they also know it's more likely to end up being a hiker with a gun at the end of the day than a successful pig hunter, so they don't even try! But they will peek into your truck bed when you drive by!!

lol its cool im kinda of tired of all this hush hush anyways. who knows maybe someone will see this give it a try, bag one, and post it up on here.

Sup Bret, looks like you've been everywhere man. Good luck bro.

That morning i think i would have seen them if i went straight to the area i seen all the rooting and droppings everything was kind of frosted out except for the areas that were rooted up even the droppings looked warm still I poked it with a stick and it wasnt even frozen. I had told one of my hunting buddies to hold off on any shots until i looked around for a while but he was too anxious to shoot the damn birds. I really want to go back but im all out of sick days.

I seen lots of big cat tracks out there and so im kinda of worried about going out alone there. Hopefully its just big bob cats and not the mt. lions.

Good attitude to have there Beezer!! I've emailed a few folks here on JHO to give exact directions to where I have found good sign over the years. I haven't heard back from them, nor have I seen any posts here about them scoring a pig, so I assume they have not scored yet. I think the odds around Pine Flat are much lower than Upper Cottonwood and Fort Hunter Ligget for public land -- maybe even less than the Coalinga area public land. The Pine Flat area is easy to figure out -- it's basically national forest land, so if someone just looks at the forest maps they can see where the public land is located and how to access it. But it is very tough to be lucky enough to see a pig in the small open areas that they cross.

You sure those were cat tracks? No exposed toenail prints? Cats may be in the area stalking winter deer though.

Beezer there is a big difference in the track of a mt. lion and a bob cat. A lion track will be about the size of your fist.

Probably was a lion. I think there are more up in that area than people realize.

Here is a trail cam pic I got from the same general area that I shot my pig.

Welcome beezer. There is no problem posting up about any areas. The Post Nazis are being dealt with.

I've covered this subject ad nauseum but let's do it again for the 50th time. If you don't like someone talking about an area that's fine, just keep your yap shut. If you don't have anything positive to add then please move on to another thread. If you feel the urge to tell someone to shut their piehole then you will be the one silenced. This forum was started to share info and pics and ANYONE who tries to stop that will be shown the door. I don't care how long you've been here or how big your throne is.

I have never been to Pine Flat, but I have heard the Hogs are moving toward the mountains. My in-laws live in Arnold and they said there have been reports of hogs in their area (maybe old news but its new news to me so I thought I would pass it on)

"that place is too thick" -- what's the matter Beezer, afraid of a little brush? I am determined to get through the thick stuff to where I know those pigs sleep during the day -- just got to get my 35 y/o nephew to beef up his cajones to do a little more tunnel-ratting with me!!.

As far as JHO, looks like CAhntr has drawn first blood. I am willing to bet I will draw 2nd blood come winter 2009 before any of the rest of you guys!! I think I know a couple places beyond the thick stuff that no man has walked within at least the last 3 decades -- it is too thick! I haven't been able to find a route into them yet; but I will prevail! And I will post pictures! I'll even post pictures of the stars at night so the rest of you guys can try and triangulate the honey hole!
