I've recently been thinking about taking out some of my pitbulls out to hunt with me and was wondering if anyone else here is using pits? For me its just that i know lots of people with pitbulls and have some my self, not game bred though kinda more on the bully side but a little running should get them in shape. So how do you train them to find the pigs do they just run around until they smell something or do they have to run with well experienced dogs first? But one thing is for sure they love my brothers chickens. Any input would be appreciated.

Typically Pits are used to catch pigs, not find them. I have used them in the past. Flatbroke has one now. The problem is they like to catch, and they do it with passion. If they grab something they are not supposed to it creates a big problem. They do not listen as well as other dogs used to find hogs. They also burn out sooner. They can run and get tired before they find game. Pits have good nose's and can learn to find hogs. The problem is when they find it, they won't bark, just catch it. Without barking you will have no idea where they are. Sometimes the pig will squeal, and you could hear them, but a boar may not. And no telling how far away they may get. At times you may not even hear barking. Have to look for them.

It is tried and proven, use a strike dog to find the hog and bay it. Get close, then send in the pits. This gives you the option to see the pig and decide if you want to catch it, or call the other dogs off. You will always have close control of the pit.

Send me a PM if you want more info (we may have a dog for sale)

Flatbroke, in my opinion, it will work. ...though I completely agree with bigworm. You just got to try it and see what happens. We've used purebred red nose pits before and one in particular let out some loud yips when she was onto a pig. Was great to hear her "sing". I think it's more usual though for them to not make much noise at all.

Out here we use mutts with some pit at least 1/8th mixed with hound or bird dog to give them more stamina and a better nose. Hound barks more and ranges farther than bird dog-cross. Terriers will also do the job.

All I can say is try it and see what happens. Chickens are a good start at getting the dog gamey. You could pen train but that crosses the line on cruelty. I say take him and see what happens.

Nic, Beezer was asking not Flatbroke. Flatbroke has several dogs, 1 he posted to show Beezer. He also has strike dogs, some registered Catahoula, and Blackmouth currs.

Long legged buggers you have there beezer. Just my opinion but I don't think they're quite built right for swine patrol. I see a lot of lost races and frustration coming but that's just my $.02.

I couldn't imagine those dogs chasing down and stopping a galloping boar...just my .02

Flatbroke on the other hand....those are some nice game looking pits...those are the types I would want for hunting

Yeah, I'm a bit sceptical on those dogs chasing down and catching a pig on their own.

Flatbroke and Bigworm what kind of cut-vest should I buy this little guy?
He sounds just like a little pig when his nose is to the ground. He's a natural killer and has the teeth and attitude to back it up.

I would recomend a bay vest from Razorback, or Ugly Dog Ranch. You might even be able to get him a G I JOE brand bullet proof vest at Target. He kinda looks lik E.T.
