Planning my first CA pig hunt

Actually, my first *anywhere* pig hunt! Hence, I'm looking for some advice. I've been reading over the boards extensively

I was originally hoping to hunt the Mendicino/Napa/Sonoma country, simply because I really love the area, but I haven't been too successful finding online anything that I found really appealing. I've been looking hard at Fort Hunter Liggett. I kind of like the idea of a DIY or semi-guided hunt.

Regarding FHL, I have a few questions. I understand it is also open to hunting on federal holidays. On a two-day permit, does it allow hunters to scout one day and hunt the next two on a three-day weekend? Another thing, I gathered from the board that there are a couple of knowledgeable local folks who will take you on a scout and direct you to good hunting areas on FHL for a nominal fee. Anyone have any more information on that?

Also relating to FHL, how common are closures? It would not be good if I took vacation time and flew in from Seattle, my dad drove down from Oregon, only to be locked out of the base. Should I be concerned?

Thanks in advance. I have some things to discuss regarding riflery, but I don't wish to jack my own thread yet.

if your coming all that way you might want to consider a fully guided private land hunt,by the time you factor
in all your expenses ,time ,blood,sweat and tears,it may be worth it?you will have many responses to this topic,
if you need list of "reputable guides"just ask,and you will get all you want,there are a few that are top notch that work the central coast area which is where f.h.l. is located, good luck and let us know how you do

How much big game hunting experience do you have?

If you're looking for a DIY at a good price, the Tejon pig management hunts really can't be beat. Do a little homework and you'll see tons of pigs. The place is over run.
Consider joining the JHO crew on their POR in May. Lot's of veterano's will give you an inside scoop on killing pigs in that place. many have scored their first pigs, and big game animals for that matter, at Tejon.

Hey Buddy,
My advice is Mustang guide service with Frank Mtaschi, he runs a great hunt for $450.00 2 days. He will hunt till you get one, I ve shot two boars with him. You stay at a local hotel where he picks you up.
his price includes field dress and a trip to the taxidermy...
He's in the DF&G guide directory...
He has access to over 100k acres running from Paso robles through King City.

I agree that going guided for your first pig hunt would be the best way to go. It's nice to have someone show you the ropes for the first time and help you recognize what to look for. Also, it gives you a much better chance than public land. I have not hunted FHL yet but heard its a great place. If you dont want to go guided your next best bet would be Tejon Ranch. It is a huge, beautiful ranch and believe me, it has some hogs!! I took my second pig there, first with a bow, this summer.

You may want to check on guides in the Redding/Red Bluff area. That way you could ride at least part of the way with your Pop. Also, if you do score a couple of pigs you can transport them a shorter distance. Food for thought.

I like probably every other hog hunter on here feel that your first time should be with a guide. It could take you years to learn on your own what you can pick up in a weekend with an experienced and reputable guide. And it looks like you are coming from out of state, which is even more reason to have a guide. It will maximize your chances of a successful hunt and provide you with fundimentals to build on. There are serveral great guides that are sponsors of this fine forum that all of us would recommend. I have personal experience with RNJ out of Coalinga as have many of my friends. There is a brand new cabin at the ranch to stay in, first class guides, and the 14,000 acre ranch has been in the family for over 100 years! Kind of hard to beat that. Don't be shy on asking about hot spots at Tejon.. There's some guys around here who've scored there a few times.
